How noisy is it? It's obviously ungainly....the tactical question is whether it's going to be something that'll have to be left waaay behind on a patrol to keep it from revealing a platoon's position prematurely......

I'd imagine they can easily be programmed (trained?) to follow the soldiers in a patrol, much as dogs can be trained to follow, or else lead, their owners.
Pretty cool stuff that.

As a general rule defence contractors are only allowed to publicise fairly harmless developments - you never saw smart bombs until they started flattening bad guys for example. Trade shows for the industry are different where you can see IFF sentry systems that can hit any moving object or object giving off the right thermal signature not carrying an Idenfication Friend or Foe system.
Nothing new in this technology and making it mobile presents no issues. The IDF has a "thnking drone" that will fly through your window and blow up.

Pretty soon these land drones will be demanding our clothes, looking for Sarah Connor, telling us to get down and that they'll be back and that they cannot cry.

For the interim period we will have to make do with console warriors of the egg box generation fighting a conflict through ccd eyes. Doubt somehow enters the edge of my mind.

ATLAS, a humanoid robot by Boston Dynamics
October 25, 2012 4:00 PM
DARPA's latest challenge kicked off yesterday at the agency's conference center in Arlington, Va. The Pentagon research division wants semiautonomous robots that can perform human chores such as driving vehicles, letting themselves into buildings, and repairing equipment, with the stated purpose of creating bots that could help in disaster-response efforts.
