Most definitely true. And the prejudice was carried with people as well. My immigrant grandparents had a strong dislike of Jewish people.

Yes I agree, even with my parents generation, and I am sure that they had nothing to directly concern them,so it must have been handed down for they were ordinary loving people. lcm1

Have just watched a film on SBS called Sarah's Key.It was about 1942 in Paris and the roundup of hundreds of French Jews, not by the Germans but by the French Police under the instructions of the French Government. It was called the Vel'd'Hiv roundup. The story may have been fiction but the basis of the story was most positively Facts. People shouting insults at them as they were herded into trucks, men women and children, most depressing and shows how easy it could happen in other places besides Germany. lcm1

Yes, Lcm1, there were some disgraceful figures in the Vichy Govt who actually shared some of the Nazi philosophies, were proactive in organizing militia to hunt down Commie partisans, etc.

I have read that the French are in denial about many Frenchmen's role in WWII. Not all of them were active in the Maquis, by any means.

I remarked recently to someone about a film I saw recently on SBS that was based on facts which were of a round up of Jews in Paris in 1942 ordered by the French Government and carried out by the police. Men,women and children herded into trucks then housed in a stadium in appalling conditions before being put into labour camps. I told it not to denigrate the French in general but to show that such things could happen where you may least expect it. lcm1

Yep, you've seen the pictures of rough justice being served by villagers on suspected collaborators.
If you had an established career in a country under occupation, it might pay to cozy up to the new masters to ensure continuity of business.
A lot of this stuff has been unverified, but it does look like Coco Chanel (who is otherwise to be admired for making aspects of haute couture available to the middle class) probably went 'above and beyond' ...
