Best Pin Up of WW II: Virginia Mayo vs Betty Grable (Round 1)

Virginia Mayo

(November 30, 1920 January 17, 2005) she was recruited by vaudeville performer Andy Mayo to appear in his act (as ringmaster for two men in a horse suit), taking his surname as her stage name. She appeared in vaudeville for three years in the act, appearing with Eddie Cantor on Broadway in 1941's Banjo Eyes. Mayo continued her career as a dancer, then signed a contract with Samuel Goldwyn and appeared in several of Goldwyn's movies. With Danny Kaye she played the dream-girl heroine in comedies including Wonder Man (1945). According to widely published reports from the late 1940s, the Sultan of Morocco declared her beauty to be proof of the existence of God.

Betty Grable

(December 18, 1916 July 2, 1973) She was propelled into the acting profession by her mother. For her first role, as a chorus girl in the film Happy Days (1929), Grable was only 13 years old (legally underage for acting). In the late 1930s, Grable stared in several B movies, mostly portraying co-eds. Despite playing leads, the typecasting proved to hurt her career more than it was helpful. In 1939, Grable appeared in Million Dollar Legs, from which her nickname is taken. In a 1940 interview, she said that she was "sick and tired" of show business and had decided to retire, but changed her mind - she received an unsolicited offer to go on a personal appearance tour, which she accepted and which led to Darryl F. Zanuck offering her a bigger contract. Grable became 20th Century Fox's top star during the decade. It was during her reign as box office queen in 1943 that Grable posed for her famous pinup photo, which (along with her movies) soon became escapist fare among GIs fighting in World War II. The image was taken by studio photographer Frank Powolny. It was rumored that the particular pose and angle were chosen to hide the fact that Grable was pregnant at the time of the photo.

Who will advance to the next Round?

Vote!

I was surprised that Betty was likely pregnant at the time of her most famous pin-up photo.

Betty doesn't do much for me. I went with Virginia. I don't think it is even close!

Before we let HPJ off the hook on the pregnancy I think we should run a DNA test!

Best regards,
Dennis
