I think you've hit on something: the Hilux enjoys advantages of good mileage and conventional dimensions. It might enjoy a couple of others: parts availability, and cost of acquisition and maintenance. Is it perfect? I doubt that such a vehicle has ever existed -- but it's good enough, for the price, and that's what counts.

Holistically it just seems to tick enough relevant boxes, just enough - milage, size, parts availability, price, availability, ruggedness. Whilst a perfect vehicle would be great in all areas, this is good enough in the important ones without detracting from the others?

Oh yeah? If you know so much about America, then how is it you don't know the Retarded Test?
I'm sorry, but slow-witted Britons won't stand a chance over here, mate: you'll be scalped at the airport.

Don't tell anyone but the slow witted bit is a front. We all pretend to be mouth breathers incase we have to sell London bridge to passing American tourists.

And what about those Brits who've bought the Brooklyn Bridge -- twice?

All part of the same front. It primes the population of the US to think that with a bit of all American know how they will run rings round the locals in their cute thatched cottages.
They arrive at Heathrow to find their luggage has been given a good going through by the handlers and their trip into central London made easier by the removal of all heavy valuables. The robbery continues in the taxi from the airport. When the driver first diplomatically discovers if they have ever taken a black cab and then on being told no charges them twice the meter price added hilarity occurs when they are dropped of in Mile End in stead of the city. When some of them eventually reach their hotels, generally barefoot and empty handed their crash course on the quaint ways of the English continues as they are in quick succession sold such bargains as time share apartments in the Tower of London, Buckingham palace and the houses of parliament. By the time those who haven't been sold into slavery finally get re patriated by the embassy they have generally learnt that a country that counts a slaver and part time pirate and two highway robbers amoung it's national heroes is a very special place.

But I'd say the M1113 HMMWV is a contender of the Hilux. Larger payload capacity without degrading off road performance. Not burdened by the weight of uparmored Humvee, so its still quick and nimble as a pickup. With a towhook compatible to military trailers, makes it easy to hook up artillery or generators and go.

|
not to belittle the Hummvee but there is a slight price difference and differing design philospy between the civilian market Toyota pickup used as a technical and a the military market Humvee..
not unlike comparing a F650 to a deuce and a half..
