THE Victoria Cross won't be awarded retrospectively to World War I Digger John Simpson or a dozen others, despite calls for their gallantry to be rewarded.

The Defence Honours and Awards Appeal Tribunal has concluded no award of the VC or any other medal should be made to the 13 soldiers and sailors who were the subjects of its year-long inquiry.

The tribunal's decision, released today, is supported by the federal government, after the cases were reviewed by independent experts.

I would like to see the report.

IMO, John Simpson certainly deserves the VC, as does "Teddy" Sheean.

I'll sit on the fence as to whether or not John Simpson Kirkpatrick should receive the VC, to be perfectly honest he has found himself a place in ANZAC folklore... which is a remarkable position to find yourself, more than what any medal could prevail.

So will I, I've just borrowed a book from the local library Dust Donkeys and Delusions.- The myth of Simpson and his Donkey Exposed by one Graham Wilson. The blurb of the back cover begins " Dust, Donkeys and Delusions examines the myth and clinically debunks the myth that has grown up around Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick, the so-called ' Man with a Donkey'... "

To me, the move to award Simpson a VC is reminiscent of the push to rehabilitate "Breaker" Morant. (Another uppety pom- the place is full of them!)

But I'll read the book and see.

I think it all comes back to a 1916 book titled, Glorious Deeds of Australasians in the Great War. which was designed to give comfort to the people at home.

I have to wonder if the 12 new E/A-18G Growlers are instead of modifying the existing F/A-18F Super Hornets into Growlers or in addition to modifying the existing planes, in other words, will we end up with 36 F/A-18E/F & 12 E/A-18G or 24 F/A-18E/F & 24 E/A-18G, guess we’ll just have to wait & see.

Either way, we can kiss 100 F-35s goodbye, it’s looking more like a half & half split, 48 Super Hornet/Growler & 48 Lightning’s.

The real story - not the silly movie.

Quote:
Operation Crossbow is a heroic but little known story from World War Two. While Hitler was developing his new V rockets, the scientists from RAF Medmenham had a secret weapon of their own: a simple stereoscope which brought to life every contour of the enemy landscape in perfect 3D. This film brings together the Spitfire pilots who took the photographs and the experts who made sense of the clues hidden within them. Modern computer graphics show just how the photo interpreters were able to thwart

....NT road and rail system is actually quite easy to explain...the rail link between Adelaide and Darwin exist, so does the Stuart Highway between both cities, then you have the Victoria Highway which links Katherine to WA, via the Kimberly Coast, and then the Barkley highway which links Darwin to Queensland via Mount Isa....and that's it really....

Please note that the Wet season has and does wipe out every one of these links every now and again due to soil erosion during heavy rain. If the Barkley Highway is cut for example, heavy rigid trucks have to divert back through QLD then NSW to get back on the Stuart Highway then head North again. This has happened a few years back and food delays up here were severe......you just don't experience something like that down South....

Apparently the type is very individual from one plane to the next, a product no doubt of the extensive time taken to deliver it from prototype to operational aircraft, so there are a lot of complaints from ground crew who work on them because it is extremely difficult to replace or swap parts between airframes because the don't adhere to commonality within the production run.

They also suffer from low servicability (obvious i guess if the above is to be believed..) and that includes the radar, which suffers numerous failures of key components...

Of course, it seems that the Russian Govt have faith in the programme because they have announced a doubling of orders for the type so as to equip two full strength wings. Perhaps more certainty about its immediate future will alleviate some of the problems found in it?

I guess too that it points to something that I contend is a more serious issue and that is that Suhkoi simply isnt a big enough company to fulfill both domestic and especially export orders of at least 6 different versions of the SU-30 family, plus more estoric types like the SU-34 and SU-35. thye have to share with Russia's giant natural resource industry for engineers and computer scientist and i think it is obvious that they are losing that war quite badly right now.

A merger with one of the Western aviation giants might just solve this issue, but i cannot see it happening for many reasons...

Defence to get new jets, patrol boats

"Australia will buy an additional 12 Super Hornet combat aircraft and replace the Navy's hard-working patrol boat fleet.

The 2013 Defence White Paper, released on Friday, also says the federal government remains committed to the advanced Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter due to enter service around 2020."

"But as a hedging strategy, the RAAF will acquire 12 additional Super Hornets with potent electronic warfare Growler technology taking its fleet to 36.

The government will also bring forward the replacement of the Navy's Armidale class patrol boats, which are used to intercept asylum seeker boats arriving in Australian waters.

As well, the Navy's supply ships HMAS Sirius and HMAS Success will be replaced as soon as possible.

[.....]"

No mention in this report re: Collins replacement.

Well its official, defence minister Smith announced buying 12 growlers [along side the 24 super hornets] and 72 F-35's plus a slight increase in defence spending, hopefully eventually getting near 2%.
He mentioned that the 2% figure hasn't been realized since early 2000..

Australian Defence Force ….. A White Paper that not to real…….in defence terms

Can Australia still afford the cost of the Lockheed F-35………
It may be good strategy to run with the additional Super Hornets…. as per White paper …….and look at other fighters …..that are actually flying (working) and not going sky high in$$$$$$$$
