What they did off Hawaii against all the disadvantages thrown in their path was pretty extraordinary to say the least.

The problem in the future [apart from building the right boat] is getting enough young blokes to man them.

Might have to start poaching likely candidates from UK or the US [at least one of the crew of the Rankin was from the US, [Texas IIRC] but I guess it's a two way road if you go down that that track..
I was blown away with the documentary, it was a revealing and a honest approach in the everyday lives onboard HMAS Rankin. And yes, the captain was brilliant, he was professional in every degree and yet open enough to allow the viewer a better experience in how he runs the sub. In particular, I was more intrigued with the guys who run the diesels, they were great. I learnt a lot more about the Collins class watching this show, I could easily watch it again.
I was amused when they got involved in the rim pac exercises... the Americas hooked not one, not two, but three anti sub helicopters to keep Rankin in check... they certainly didn't want a repeat of what happened in rim pac 2000. HMAS Waller successfully engaged two USN nuclear submarines before coming into attacking range of USS Abraham Lincoln(CVN-72).

That last one was a rather interesting read, but I think it would be better to start with known friends like Singapore & expand to Malaysia & The Philippines, & then look at South Korea & Japan, before going to Indonesia, or any other country we don’t have a “Strategic” relationship with already.

We have good agreements with Singapore, and they bring their Leopard IIs and planes to Queensland... they don't have much room to breath over there.

Not bad for a sub class that has many critics in the media.

Yep, it would be close to the best doco I've seen, & I've seen plenty [History channel]

And as you say the Americans weren't taking any chances with the Rankin which was 'tagged' from the outset by three choppers feeding two destroyers, a frigate & a nuclear sub as it left harbour, but some superb work by the Captain & crew in loosing them & Rankin then went on the attack.

I loved that periscope shot of an Arleigh Burke sailing right across The Rankins bows, unaware what was going to happen, scratch one Burke.

The 20,000 nautical miles [37,000 km; 23,000 mi] voyage—the longest undertaken by a Collins-class submarine to that date—began with workups in February, and saw the submarine visit Korea, Japan, and Hawaii, and participate in various multinational exercises before returning to Fremantle via Sydney. Rankin was at sea for 126 days, 80% of which was spent underwater. From Wiki.

It was a massive undertaking in building them, unfortunately things went badly wrong initially, & it took between one & two billion dollars to set them right.

But in the end we got superb Submarines, who have proved how good they are by getting high recommendations from the C in C of the USN Pacific after the RIMPAC exercises..

But they're in a bit of trouble again with only two boats available for patrol recently, & a shortage of crew, up to $60,000 in bonuses were being paid to keep specialized crew members on board for another tour.

China Warns Australia

Colonel Liu directly warned Australia not to follow the US or Japan into any military conflict with China. He said Australia should play the role of a ‘‘kind-hearted lamb’’ and China would discourage it from being led astray.
‘‘Australia should never play the jackal for the tiger or dance with the wolf,’’ he said.

Colonel Liu asked that his message be conveyed directly to the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, as she prepares to deliver a major speech on national security.

Like her predecessors, Ms Gillard has maintained that Australia will not have to choose between its economic and security interests.
‘‘American hegemony is not at its dawn and not at its zenith,’’ Colonel Liu said. ‘‘It is at its sunset and night is coming.’’

So Australia should not play the pugnacious platypus or the war-mongering wombat but rather the kind Koala and the well-wishing wallaby.

Well it seems that there are several different animal characteristics for the Chinese. I couldn't find Koala or Wallaby. You may need to settle for Monkey: MONKEY: You are a vary intelligent and a very clever wit. Because of your extraordinary nature and magnetic personality, you are always well-liked. The Monkey, however, must guard against being an opportunist and distrustful of other people. Your sign promises success in any field you try. http://www.chinatoday.com/culture/zodiac/zodiac.htm

I am surprised that the U.S. is the Tiger rather than the Snake.

I am still waiting to hear what Australian Politicians have to say about China telling them what they have to do! Maybe they don't make politicians like they used to Down Under?

I would think the best course of action would be to simply ignore what was put forward by just a Colonel, probably to elicit some response. Why give the Chinese a reaction. I would “keep my cards close to the vest.”

The Chinese know the ADF is in the deep end in regards to close defence ties with the US, they know such "controversial" messages get a lot of circulation via the media so they play that to their full advantage.

I imagine that as our preceeding PM "Kevin 747" speaks fluent Mandarin, and that our current Foreign Minister and next Prime Ministerial contender Bob Carr has a Chinese wife, that Australia may be seen to be moving closer to China's way of seeing things.

No doubt China must see that consecutive Australian Governments have not gone down the path of agreeing to 'everything' the US suggest concerning China. First the Libs, under Howard, declined an American invitation to join a US led Pacific pow wow to work out ways to curb China's growing influence in the Pacific, & recently the Gillard government turned down the Americans suggestion of a permanent base for their carriers in Perth.

Guess it takes some fancy footwork sometimes, trying to please both a number one military ally & a number one trading partner, but with a modicum of common sense everything should work out OK in the end.............shouldn't it?
