"Finch battalion is certainly able to advance Colonel, given some time to reorganize I suggest we advance to the left, just outside effective range of both remaining units opposite us.

Advancing my line companies fast and in echelon formation I can likely flank them before they can change facing, move my skirmishers up behind my line and get into their rear.

With some smoke and artillery fire we can isolate both remaining units and probably create the impression they are surrounded and outnumbered, in a lost position and left behind by the rest of the army.

Obviously there are some concerns, the strength of the two remaining units, their morale, the range of their weapons and someone needs to man the barricade we occupy now and keep up fire from the front.

Also - this is not exactly according to orders which iirc told us to hold the line, not rout the enemy.

If the enemy has a second wave to throw at us, our offensive may cost us dearly.

Not sure what information we have of enemy reserve formations to the rear.

But it is an option."

Seeing the 10th disintegrate into a mob, I turn my guns on the Union battery firing on the fort. "Let's show them who's the better shot boys! Give them some hot iron!" I hold up a gold dollar coin. "This is for the crew that gets the first dismount!"

Player's Orders:

1.) Hold fast the strong points. Get men rotated out and reload all rifles, ready to open fire at moment's notice.

2.) Badgers is to target all officers of 5th RI. Let's focus on that regiment first before moving on to 23rd MA. The goal here is to break 5th RI's morale and leadership.

End Player's Orders

Sennef turns to Fawcett who looks a bit absent:

This still is your battle Harry.
For the moment it is good to remember your mission: Defend in this position.
Restoring the status quo may be a clear Commanders Intent.

Execution wise it might be a good idea to let the artillery do the work.
- Gardner has initiated counter battery fire
- Tremayne once he is done daydreaming about tea parties or complaining about the snow may turn his howitzers on the 99th after which we retake the position with infantry

If you feel indisposed I can issue orders along these lines.

I will consider Finch riding up to discuss matters my "action" for this turn.

Obviously my battalion will fire as appropriate, but we will not undertake anything extraordinary until additional orders are issued.

Maj Bird is reorganizing his GJ battalion into two 90-strong companies in the brick yards.

Morale is hurting and the GJ are not in any condition for any immediate action.

General S. sighs:
In case no other orders forthcoming from Col Fawcett or in absence of specific sub unit orders:
General order for all Rainbow sub units is to re-organize, refit, re-supply. Keep battlefield overview, as battle is not over yet.
Artillery has specific orders, see above.

IIRC Fawcett is having some RL issues. I haven't been able to raise him offline, so he's probably caught up in something.

March 18th, 1240hrs

All along the front, things stabilize to one degree or the other. The temporary loss of Colonel Fawcett, dazed after being kicked by his horse, puts the onus on General Sennef. He opts to reorganize Rainbow in light of the current situaiton, as his troopers and the Hussars round up the prisoners and send them to rest under the watchful eye of Bird's own reorganizing battalion.

The 23rd Mass and 5th RI continue to stand outside of range, watching the cavalry and command elements clean up after the hard fight, but neither regiment seems eager to press forward given what has transpired with their counterparts. With everyone busy, and the Brittanic Battery continuing to operate without orders, the 99th New York make a break for it and get back to their own lines, avoiding the ire of Bates' men by crossing over the strongpoint out of his line of fire.

Major Pruitt pulls his cavalry back a short ways to reload and reassess.

Major Finch takes the time to reorganize his own troops and contact General Sennef to advise him that his battalion is able to advance if needed.

Major Holden's men return to their preferred state, taking deliberate shots at the officers and color party of the 5th Rhode Island. Their first shots aren't particularly effective, but their subsequent fire reaps a toll on the bluebellies, though at the range they can't be certain that they're hitting all officers. Many among the 5th RI crouch or lie down on the field, but they don't seem to be ready to retreat just yet.

Gardner's gunners fire on the Marine Artillery, and a brisk exchange of fire occurs, with the Grenadiers and Tigers hugging their trenches as shells scream back and forth. Eventually one of the Parrots scores a solid hit on a gun barrel, sending it toppling back and wrecking its own carriage. Return fire begins to reduce the fort wall but doesn't penetrate, though Gardner does involuntarily flinch as one bolt shrieks by him. The remaining three guns appear to have had enough, and limber up and move to the rear, where it appears through Gardner's telescope that a senior officer is rallying the disorganized troops back into formations.

(Long Update due to little action......)

The Tiger's hear the distinctive blast and sound of the shell flying through the air. There is no more eerie and frightening noise than a cannon firing at you, but the Tiger's laugh. Seeing the Yanks run back has filled the Tigers with great delight and with being shelled so much in this battle, and with most of its men, many battles involving artillery. It's why Tiger's don't meat grind forward into it. Maybe with some whiskey, a good jaunt in skirmish formation we can advance beneath them and are harder to hit, but the Tiger's do love the safety of these ramparts and our own artillery dealing deadly damage to those poor Yanks.

Leroy expects a counterattack by the 8th, 10th and 11th CT's who are still there but are far from reinforcing their left flank. What if the Tiger's skirmished the 5th RI on their right flank as soon as they engage Finch or if they past the N-S line following the rear wall of the fort?

So the Tiger's orders are to hold position until 5th RI either, passes N-S line following the rear wall of the fort or engage Finch and form skirmish line on their right and rear firing well aimed seated shots at them from distance at a high rate of fire. If in the event the 10th CT advances halfway past the treeline the Tiger's will withdraw back to the ramparts. If for some reason the 5th RI does not do said above but the 10th CT does advance we stay in position.

If the 5th RI does engage Finch and the 10th CT doesn't advance I can try to run behind the 5th RI and shoot any officer's and NCO's and split their formation to fight us.

What is the star indicated on the map behind the 23 MA? If that's important the Tiger's can maneuver to kill or capture whatever that is but that's more a cavalry's job, as Leroy reminiscences of the wars in Texas and Mexico where he and his men were always mounted. Is the 99th NY, cavalry? If so, then the Tiger's will not be focusing on that star unless the 99th NY tries to flank our right and 5th RI and 23 MA are engaged.

Bates seeing his men being organized back to formation goes to visit Major Bird who is nearby. Finding him quickly after asking directions from resting soldiers he greets him and asks a simple question.

"Sir, do you think we are ready to move back to the line and prepare for another go at this?"

Player's Orders,

Cease firing for now. Holden should check on his men, going up and down the line, exhorting and dressing down his men if needed. Get together with officers to discuss the next move and send out riders to north and south of the front line to get more information on the overall picture of battlefield. Rotate men out so that some can get rest and tend to their minor wounds. Eat some rations.

Holden wants his officers to continue observing enemy officers in their designated sectors. If the entire enemy unit stands up, give them 10-15 minutes to lull them into false sense of thinking that we won't fire at them as the range is supposedly too far, then open fire at the end of 10-15 minutes. If they start to march, hold fire until they're marching 150 meters from their current position, then have all Holden's men to open fire, as always before, target all officers first.

End Player's Orders

Bird looks at Bates.

"Are the Green Jackets ready to go back to the line, you asked?"

The Green Jackets commander knows that it is not Bates fault that his battalion is in the position it is now, and works hard on controlling his temper.

A few minutes earlier, 2Lt Dyers rode back from his overwatch position on the South flank to inform him that the 99th NY have withdrawn complete back to the forest. Rainbow cavalry seem to have stayed in the old GJ defensive position for the time being.

"Look Bates, the state of my unit is going to take a bit more time to put itself back together...And now I been told to take care of Yank prisoners with no further direction... So, no, I am not ready to go back on the line at this point!"

The GJ sergeant-major is proceeding to recuperate the wounded on the field and bringing them back the brick yards.

Capt Walsh, his XO, is a casualty and by looking at his wounds, he is not going to be around for a bit until he mends.

Capt Frumm takes over as XO and is dealing with the PW.

He is helped by one of the ad hoc companies now commanded by 1Lt Devers.

The other company is commanded by 1Lt Simms and is sorting itself out with ammo, and providing help to the sergeant-major.

The troops still address Maj Bird with respect. But the smiles are gone. He could feel the troops are blaming him for the little jaunt that they did that caused their friends - in some cases family members - to die or get wounded with little to show for it...Maj Bird feels the guilt.

No, the GJ are not ready to move forward yet....He now sends 2Lt Dyers in the direction of New Bern to find a Militia unit that can come take care of the Yank PWs and escort the wounded to the rear.

"Understood sir, we shall hold the line until you are ready"
With that Bates salutes his superior and moves back to his men. They are going to move to their old position and start preparing for round two. They are to collect their own dead and take their ammunition and if anyone alive is found, they are carried back to other wounded men.
