Basically, it was an attempt to update the M18 and thereby extend its usefulness.
The M1A1 gun was found lacking against the German Panther tank and it was therefore decided in June 1945 to extend the life of the M18 by adding to it the turret of the M36 Jackson with its more powerful 90 mm M3 gun. Initially, the relatively small M18 chassis could not accommodate the considerable recoil forces generated by this much larger gun. When firing the main gun, the tank was pushed back almost two feet and rocked violently when firing with the turret traversed. To remedy this problem a muzzle break was added to the gun (as illustrated in the image) and this brought recoil forces down to a manageable level. Furthermore, wider tracks were added in order to compensate for the added weight of the larger turret.
Though the concept was proved feasible, the Japanese surrender in Aug 1945 brought an end to the program.
