these are the German soldiers I as talking bout. These are good germans .

Nothing was done to threaten their families and they were often reassigned duties which suited their temperament.
Duties that don't include killing other races of persons.

The book I'm current reading, "I Will Bear Witness", the posthumously published diary of Victor Klemperer, the Jewish chairman of Romance languages at Dresden Technical University, describes a 1934 Germany at odds with itself, in public, the Hitler salute, the absolute control of the media; in private, the grumblings over the general state of affairs, worries as to the chaos that would ensue should Hitler be overthrown or murdered.

I found this entry particularly amusing:

October 6, Saturday

[...]Salzburg Sr. related as absolutely vouched-for an incident at a performance of Don Carlos in Hamburg. At Posa's words, "Sire, allow freedom of thought!" there were several minutes of applause. The next day, Don Carlos was dropped from every theater, including Dresden.

Yes and sadly the German people got so deep into the mire which was partly their own construction that for them there was no turning back, no escape from the Nazi party that they themselves had put into power and could no longer openly object to,(at the risk of their own lives) leaving only one course open to them, to tolerate and to hope. As forlorn as that might be!

Germany was a conservative country for centuries before the brief period of Hitlerite rule. Many Germans... whether in the Reich,Austria, the Sudetenland or the "Corridor" supported the unification of all the German peoples under one flag. Only when it was to late..following Hitler's breaking of the Munich agreement and occupation of non-German Bohemia did people begin to realize that the limited objectives of German nationalists were fundamentaly at odds with those of Hitler. Soldiers and citizens often find themselves in conflicts they would not chose to support if they could...were all Russians as blood thirsty as Stalin?? To many colonial peoples in Asia and Africa..the British seemed as bad as the SS. Most Germans merely wanted to see a United Germany...not the "thousand year reich" of a meglomaniac.

Unfortunately, the longer that Hitler remained in power, the more forlorn the hope of ousting him and his criminal cronies.

BTW, let's not forget that the Nazi's never received a majority of the November '32 vote and after the Reichstag fire, the Nazi's, through cunning and brutality, usurped the democratic functions of the Weimar Republic.
