Realize that the reason "Lost Causers" are still around is because there is some truth within the lost cause. Don't get caught up in the North's "Treasury of Virtue". There is a lot more to this war than "the North good, the South" bad. Just as some Neo-Confederates get caught up in trying to somehow take slavery out of the equation; there are others that can't see anything else but a righteous North. Both ideals are garbage.

Very true. I've always said that the North cannot be portrayed as the "good guys" with white hats & a squeeky clean record. It was war & both sides did terrible things. Even in World War 2, the last "Good war", we did some pretty awful stuff in pursuit of victory. Yet in both cases, the right side won. Neither was pretty.

In France, north was portrayed as the good, while the south was the bad.
As i grew up,i realized the truth was a multiple shade of grey, north was not fighting for the end of slavery only..
As we have multiple examples of massacre during ww2 in Normandy, have you a link to similar facts comitted during CW?
I sometimes forget that killing civilians didn't appear with ww2...
Thanks amigos!..

William Quantrill, a noted Confederate sympathizer and army deserter, attacked and burned the city of Lawrence, Kansas and killed most of the male population with his band of guerillas. Warfare in the Trans-Mississippi Region was particularly noted for cruel and systematic guerrilla styles of war.

"If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union."

Could you guys point me to some good documentaries on DVD and Blu-Ray?
I'm especially interested in battles and campaigns.

When it comes to battles, Wide Awake Films has two good ones that I personally recommend.
The first is August Light: Wilson's Creek and the Battle for Missouri.

The second is Battle at Shiloh: The Devil's Own Two Days

Chase,
I have always found it fascinating how many years after the Civil War that some very ill feelings simmered among the Kansas and Missouri residents. A case and point can be found in the "Border War" as the Kansas Jayhawk/ Missouri Tiger rivalry is referred to.
When the Hall of Fame and former Missouri basketball coach Norm Stewart's University of Missouri basketball team played the Kansas Jayhawks, Stewart refused to have his team stay in a hotel, dine or fuel the busses in Kansas because the taxes would go to support that state. Former Kansas football coach Dan Fambrough, when referred to a doctor in Missouri stated he would "die first" before going to see a doctor in Missouri.
And you thought the Ohio State/ Michigan, Duke/ UNC, Auburn/ Bama and Texas/ Texas A&M rivalries were heated.

There's the McPherson's book in french in the collection "Bouquins" of 1991 edited by Robert Laffont under the title "La Guerre de Sécession"
there's also under the same title, the book of Bruce Catton but it is older and published by Editions Payot in 1983
Il existe le livre de McPherson en français dans la collection Bouquins de 1991 aux éditions Robert Laffont; le titre est La Guerre de Sécession

I forgot another book with the same title, that of André Kaspi published by Editions Gallimard in the collection "Découvertes"
It is especially interesting for the pictures and illustrations, but in the text you can find small errors or approximations
