Give the President some credit! Not by most posters on these forums, I am afraid that most of my fellow posters have been wringing their hands and blaming the President for everything from the perceived mutation of the USA into a Soviet Socialist Republic to the poor performance of the local dog catcher and all points between.

Left wing head bangers do a similar trick over here with Margaret Thatcher.

Question, If you are President Obama, and asked a question you don't want to answer, how do you answer it?

Easy,
President Obama answers the Japanese press with a no-answer to a 3 part question.
That Deep Bow he gave, he was apologizing for his future humiliation at not being prepared.
I read that transcript over and over, and still can't find the answer to the question.

Question from Japanese press,

Quote:
And to President Obama, you are a proponent of a nuclear-free world, and you've stated, first of all, you would like to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki while in office. Do you have this desire? And what is your understanding of the historical meaning of the A-bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Do you think that it was the right decision?
Answer Go to http://www.realclearpolitics.com/art...ama_99148.html The transcript is here for the question and answer.

I'll give you a teaser that may help you want to know more.

Quote:
Now, obviously Japan has unique perspective on the issue of nuclear weapons as a consequence of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And that I'm sure helps to motivate the Prime Minister's deep interest in this issue. I certainly would be honored, it would be meaningful for me to visit those two cities in the future. I don't have immediate travel plans, but it's something that would be meaningful to me.

You had one more question, and I'm not sure I remember it. Was it North Korea?

Q Whether or not you believe that the U.S. dropped a nuclear weapon on Hiroshima and Nagasaki -- it was right?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: No, there were three sets of questions, right? You asked about North Korea?

Q I have North Korea as well, yes.
And for those wishing to see a Clip,

President Obama, 1st Adolescent in office.

There was nothing wrong logically about dropping a nuclear weapon on the Empire of Japan. No apology needed, warrented, or should be expected.

After what happened at Nanking, and in China in general, the Japanese are fortunate we didn't drop those on more heavily populated areas. Hell, Hitler told them he didn't want a war with the United States, too. Maybe several centuries from now, if they ever decide to go to war again, they'll take a note from history and be very careful about who they make war against and how they prosecute those wars.

While I am not an apologist for the Japanese by any means...the fact is that they were trying to surrender..but made the mistake of going thru the Russians..who of course..wanted the war to last a few more months inorder to strengthen their position in Manchuria and Korea. America should always hold itself to a higher standard...perhaps the bomb could have been dropped on a Japanese Army formation or naval facility. Blasting cities... whether they are German or English or Japanese should be a last resort...and in this case...was NOT necessary...

Ric,

Frequently those who disagree with the dropping of the atmoic bombs on Japan cite the position that the Japanese were trying to surrender at that point in the war. A point where they were losing very spectacularly I might add. They wanted to surrender on terms favorable to them which given the circumstances they were not going to get even had Stalin and the Soviets not been concerned with stregthening their position. They started a war with the United States by a sneak attack and committed atrocities during that said war comparable in their inhumanity to those perpetrated by the Germans. For them to have expected anything less than the unconditional surrender that the Germans was more disingenuous thinking on their part, the same line of thinking that got them into the war in the first place. Read the history of the bombs themselves, alot of the long term complications from their use was not fully known at the time, they really were viewed as just really really big bombs.

As to your point on the "higher standard", during that war that standard was gone long before August 1945. Both sides had been bombing cities for quite a while by that point. Arguably the fire bombing of Tokyo in March of 1945 caused more immediate loss life than either of the two atomic bombs. It is estimated that over 100,000 lives were lost during that fire bombing. These bombs were in fact necessary. Had they not been used the Japanese high command would have continued to resist necessitating an invasion, or combination of blockade and continued bombing. Either one would cause jsut as much death if not more, they only difference is the amount of time it took. The bombs provided the necessary impetus for Emperor Hirohito to finally bring an end to the war by surrendering. Even then factions of the military attempted a coup to continue fighting.
