AH & Ottoman aircraft

A book claimed that the Aviatik 30.07 (below) was the biggest AH
aircraft ever. True?

It looks like German markings - did AH have their own markings?

I would be interested in seeing any pics of Ottoman aircraft.

Thanks in advance.

At the start KuK* aircraft had red and white stripes but Germany insisted on all aircraft in the Central Powers having common markings - namely theirs. The KuK and Bulgaria complied but Turkey refused to have a cross on their aircraft and so filled in the spaces between the cross arms to form a black square. The ruling was much disliked and so some Bulgaian aircraft also had a green stripe on the wings and some KuK aircraft also had red and white stripes somewhere on the aircraft as well as the cross pate.

Unlike the Germans the KuK was not into heavy bombers and the Aviatik 30.07 was not their best aircraft.

The KuK could build good aircraft and, for example, their version of the Albatross DIII did not suffer from the flutter problems trhat bedeviled the German made ones and with the big Austro Daimler engine was faster however they could not build enough

There were no Ottoman made aircraft - they used German supplied aircraft and balloons.

*KuK = kaiserlich und königlich Empire and Kingdom the official designation of the dual monarchy of Austria and Hungary

Further to the above

KuK fighters initially suffered from an armament problem in that because of the design of the breech mechanism it proved very difficult to synchronise the Schwarzlose machine gun so that early fighters had the gun mounted on the top wing to fire over the airscrew (much like the Lewis on some Allied aircraft). However unlike the Lewis the Schwarzlose was belt fed and the gun and the belt had to be enclosed in a streamlined casing. This meant that it was impossible for a pilot to clear a jam in the air.
The Aviatik D1 possibly the best KuK designed fighter, later had a synchronised machine gun firing through the prop but this was so positioned that the pilot still couldn't get at it to clear a stoppage in the air!

I knew about the green stripe (wing leading edge) on Bulgarian aircraft, and the Turkish black square (later red), but not why.

I wondered about the Schwartzloze pods as well.

Initially Ottoman aircraft had a crescent and star marking.
KuK aircraft often retained the red and white markings on the underside wing tips of the lower wing - as well as a sop to national pride this was also more visible to ground forces than the cross pate. The Fokker M series two seaters sold to the KuK air services in 1915 had such a poor ceiling that they sometimes had the red and white on the top wing as well as they were often operating below KuK forces in mountain regions

KuK air services also experimented with putting a gunner in a sort of conning tower so that he had a 360 degree field of fire. Trials at the front suggested that this was not a good idea.

Looks like the drag problem would be a mite inconvenient.
