I wouldn't say the same thing about Sean Connery or John Wayne.

With the anniversary of D-Day upon us again I guess you have made a very good point.
Is it time to consider a remake of 'The Longest Day' or other WWII
historical (ie factual stories) epics, this time using the SPR approach (bearing in mind the story itself was a fiction)?
the Pedestrian:
Battle Of Britain / Dunkirk /Midway /
Tora,Tora, Tora
the Brilliant:
Patton / Stalingrad (now 20 years old!) / Big
Red One The Great Escape (well brilliantly
entertaining anyway)
the Abysmal: [I
]A Bridge Too Far / MacArthur
We can also consider remakes of fictional stories.
I'll outline alist of which are brillliant and which are awful later on.
Candidates include:
In Which we Serve / A Walk in the Sun / The Life and Times of Colonel Blimp / Stalag 17 / Bridge on the River Kwai / Guns of Navarone / Catch 22 / Hell in the Pacific / Cross of Iron
