Yep, and its also a fact that Terrell Garren states in his work that in Western North Carolina 27,282 men from western North Carolina served in the Confederate army, while only 1,836 served in the Federal army.

There were 4 units of white soldiers who made up the Union units from North Carolina-2 infantry regiments & 2 mounted infantry:

In addition to the recruited men, there were thousands who fought the Confederates who never mustered into Federal service.

Those are from Eastern North Carolina. We were talking about the mountain regions.

Actually, it is both. The article I posted goes into detail.

The vast majority is talking about Eastern North Carolina. I think I'll have to take the word from a well researched and cited scholarly work over an internet article.

Right Savez. I simply cited that article as a quick response to show that there are other views than what you claim, but if you want to get technical, there is still plenty of scholarship that goes against what you claim. Perhaps you should read:

"The South vs. the South: How Anti-Confederate Southerners Shaped the Course of the Civil War" by William Freehling

"Bitterly Divided: The South's Inner Civil War" by David Williams

"Lincoln's Loyalists: Union soldiers from the Confederacy" by Richard Current

"Southerns in Blue: They defied the Confederacy" by Don Umphrey

"Loyalty and Loss: Alabama's Unionists in the Civil War and Reconstruction" by Margaret Storey

"The Long Shadow of the Civil War: Southern Dissent and Its Legacies" by Victoria Bynum

"Enemies of the Country: New Perspectives on Unionists in the Civil War South" by John Inscoe & Robert Kenzer

"A South Divided: Portraits of Dissent in the Confederacy" by David Downing

"Plain Folk in a Rich Man's War: Class and Dissent in Confederate Georgia" by David Williams

Would have to agree. Just as in Northern states there were people who supported the South. IMO that is the way it is on any subject. There is always a minority and a majority on any given subject in any demographic.

Nice list. I have never read any of them, but I have always concentrated my study of the war on the battles and not the political aspect.

Thank you. The political aspect is fascinating. If you would like to hear about it rather than read, here is a link to David Williams talking about his book "Bitterly Divided".....it's about an hour long, but well worth the listen:
http://www.c-span.org/video/?282699-...tterly-divided

And FYI, David Williams was born in the South, educated in the South, & teaches in the South.

Thanks. I have put it on my to do list. Has to be better than watching a rerun of something.
