Apparently things are not progressing very well in Hungary. Link to an article published in Der Spiegel on-line today.

More problems with extremists in Hungary, incredible anti-Roma comments. Der Spiegel link below, followed by excerpts. My queston - what is the point of the European Union, if this stuff STILL goes on?
http://www.spiegel.de/international/...-a-876887.html
excerpt #1-
Zsolt Bayer always pipes up whenever the Hungarian media mentions that Roma are suspected of involvement in a crime. Usually, he spares no words in his hate-filled tirades against the ethnic minority, regardless how ugly. For example, he has written: "Whoever runs over a Gypsy child is acting correctly if he gives no thought to stopping and steps hard on the accelerator."
excerpt #2 -
"A significant part of the Roma are unfit for coexistence. They are not fit to live among people. These Roma are animals, and they behave like animals. When they meet with resistance, they commit murder. They are incapable of human communication. Inarticulate sounds pour out of their bestial skulls. At the same time, these Gypsies understand how to exploit the 'achievements' of the idiotic Western world. But one must retaliate rather than tolerate. These animals shouldn't be allowed to exist. In no way. That needs to be solved -- immediately and regardless of the method."

Always looking backwards isn't the right way in the modern situation for many countries. I seriously doubt that the average citizen of Germany, France, or the UK has anything good to say about immigrants from their former Empires and neighbors, but they don't say anything. The result is crime on their own streets and a displaced native population. That is a more important issue than a Hungarian statesman insulting a group of sacred cows that everyone knows to be dishonest in their dealings. Murders aren't easily looked over, but I'd rather it was a foreign people in a land they didn't belong than the other way around.

I'm not surprised by his statements. Roma people (politically-correct term for Gypsies) are disliked throughout Eastern Europe/South-East Europe/Balkans. Calling someone a Gypsy is a traditional form of insult in this part of the world.
In Romania there have been calls to sterilize Roma women because their birthrates are way higher than the Romanian women's. The proposals range from doing it by force to paying them to accept being sterilized at least after their second child. However, these proposals remain on the political fringes. Blogs, small right-wing associations and NGOs. This sort of level. For now.

Speaking of the Roma, our federal government just recently designated Hungary along with many other nations a safe country. This makes it harder for refugees coming from these nation to enter Canada; while making it easier for the government to fast-track deportations of failed applicants.
And just to point how serious of a problem the government thinks this is, they even bought up billboard space in Hungary to advertise these new changes to the refugee process.
Around half of the refugees coming to Canada were Hungarian Roma.
