OK, fair enough.
Another thought is abandon Richmond and Petersburg earlier and join up with the Southern Army and strike hard at Sherman. Maybe (triple wink) they can really lay a whupping on a wing or two of his Army.
How about that one? I guess Grant would follow hot on their heels tho .

Sheridan would be on them constantly, and of course once they abandon Richmond, no nore artillery from Tredegar. If the roads and weather permitted--double wink, it might have worked in Jan or Feb.

The war was over as soon as the siege at Petersburg started.

It's no secret that I'm not a fan of Phil Sheridan. However, fair is fair, and to be fair about it, the Appomattox Campaign was Sheridan's finest hour. It was the one and only time where he showed a killer instinct. The successful pursuit of the ANV is in large part due to Sheridan, and for that, he deserves credit.

Eric, sometimes a loose cannon is a good thing.

Not according to Lincoln in August 1864--he really thought he wouldn't get reelected.

Sheridan also had much better horseflesh by that time (along with excellent brigade commanders)...the Reb cavalry was tapped out from the constant pressure without fresh horses and feed.

...my Mother used to tell me how much work she and her brothers and sisters had to do to keep up the 2 farm horses in the '30s (her Father died when she was 6).
Your explanation of the "care and feeding" in One Continuous Fight is if anything understated.
