Legion of the United States
I'm planning on doing some research on the "Legion of the United States" relatively soon, and I have to say that I am severely disappointed in the number of sources available on the subject.
Does anyone know of any good ones? There are no real books to my knowledge, and only a few papers. There may be a few more on Anthony Wayne and the Fallen Timbers campaign, but work that focuses primarily on the Legion is near non-existent.
The Legion of the United States was a very interesting concept. It was an early unit comprised of four combined arms "sub-legions", based on Roman sources and the writings of Maurice De Saxe. Napoleon's later corps system is rather similar in concept. The idea was conceived by Henry Knox and Baron Von Steuben, supervised by George Washington, and used very effectively by "Mad" Anthony Wayne.
So if you know of any useful sources (other than the obvious Wikipedia), I would be much obliged.
