With my UK hat on I would say that when things are really rough you need clear leadership and between Dave and Bo then Boris has to take it by a good mile. Xa,eron and Osborne are just not providing the leadership.

Milliband is a decent enough bloke and is fully qualified to run a mid sized library or even a large community centre if properly supervised. As a leader of a country in nasty times he is a bad joke gone wrong. Worse is that total piece of turd Ed Balls who totally arsed up the economy and now spends his time doing nothing much positive and screaming at Osborne like a drunken pub bore.

With my Scottish hat on the smart thing for Boris to do is offer some form of Devo Max to the Scots which they will certainly jump at, wipe out pretty much all Scottish Westminster MPs and put Labour into the back seat for 20 years. Boris would do it to "save the Union" which it would for at least a generaton.

Point of information though: being in the Sterling zone does not require the BoE to be a banker of last resort for Scotland which would be able to issue its own sovereign debt for as long as people were wiling to lend.

You did forget to mention that he will be properly supervised by his masters in the unions.

The trouble with Devo max is that you'll never sell it to us English types it looks far too much like Paying for another country to do what they like, while we foot the bill with no benefit.

Allot of people I know (even the wishy washy liberals) are of the mind that A) Salmond is a massive throber and B) either in or out.

In or out sounds good to me to be honest. The tough thing for the rest of the UK is that non-Scots will not get much of a say in the matter. We get to vote and if we do not vote Yes in 2014 we will doubtless get a revision of the devolution settlement that will greatly enhance the powers of Edinburgh at the expense of London.

Probably this would invlolve financial autonomy within the UK and some kind of ring fenced revenue share from the North Sea but with taxation raised in Scotland staying in Scotland and a transfer from us to London to pay for all them aircraft carriers and nukes London is so enamoured with.

It should put independence out of the running for a generation unfortunatly but will save the Union and pretty much poleaxe Labour for a long long time.

The Tories should be happy as it will thrash Millbrand and co. Labour oculd not push too hard against it as they need goodwill from Scotland to even stay in the game.

For me the interesting part is how the Scottish vote in 2014 interacts with the very real possibility of an EU vote of some sort in the next parliament.
