Obama To Extend Patriot Act

Quote:
WASHINGTON - The Obama administration supports extending three key provisions of the Patriot Act that are due to expire at the end of the year, the U.S. Justice Department told Congress in a letter made public Tuesday.Lawmakers and civil rights groups had been pressing the Democratic administration to say whether it wants to preserve the post-Sept. 11 law's authority to access business records, as well as monitor so-called "lone wolf" terrorists and conduct roving wiretaps.
The provision on business records was long criticized by rights groups as giving the government access to citizens' library records, and a coalition of liberal and conservative groups complained that the Patriot Act gives the government too much authority to snoop into Americans' private lives.

Roving wire-taps? Might as well let the feds have a cubicle at AT&T and your local ISP.
Of course, they could probably just buy all your info collected by your bank and credit card companies.

The roving wiretaps, along with all the other stuff, was put in place by Bush.

I often wonder if America will even return to the days before 9/11. It seems unlikely.

I have ALWAYS considered the "Patriot Act" as just another small chip in the subjugation of the Bill of Rights in favor of BIG Government.

ANY incursion into the guaranteed protections of the citizenry versus the power of the Government, I look askance.

From a purely objective outlook, one would assume that the Libs would be hard set on removing some of the more ornerous provisions in the PA.

One would then assume, from that, that Obama would go along with that.

Maybe, just maybe, the Government is unwilling to revoke that little extra "edge" in power it passed unto itself.... under "emergency" situation.

Lesson: Beware of Government revoking of "rights" under the guise of "it's only an emergency situation and will revert to normal when the emergency is over".

Those tiny little chinks taken out of our rights, never seem to go away and they are cumulative.

Be advised that a cantankerous, adversarial, law avoiding/breaking citizenry just gives "reason" for the Government to want to exert more "control" over that citizenry "for the good al ALL", of course.

A people get exactly the Government they deserve. Don't like the way our Government is going?

Bad news: A LOT of you have "asked for it".

With freedom comes a certain responsibility. Forget the "responsibility", loose the freedom.

GG, you are right as far as it goes, but to get that control the citizenry have to be generally...

ignorant, passive and politically compliant.

The latter might well describe most of those who gave the President his election win.

Its the bolshie-buggers like you and me that maintain both our countries freedoms!

We will eventually become more and more like the UK where we have almost no privacy.

I told people that all that talk of "change" was just BS and now that stuff like this happens that shows it is clear BS, they still won't believe.

I don't have a problem with the patriot act and never have. The kinds of things they are looking at do not cover ordinary citizens. Besides, I get sick and tired of hearing people whine about privacy, while routinely giving it up voluntarily to get a coupon they desire or a discount on things they buy. The private sector collects more information on people than the government could ever dream about and most of this is given voluntarily.

If you want to get off the grid in this country you still can if you really try. But through credit cards, bonus cards, membership shopping clubs, contests, and facebook it seems that most Americans can't wait to give up their privacy without a second thought.

Wait, I thought the Patriot Act was a Cheney/Rove controlled Bush command to the Republicans in the Congress over the lawful objections of all of the Democrats who were lied to by the Bush Whte House.

They must have mandatory ends to such laws, 6 months, 1yr, 18 months, after which the law must expire and a new one introduced, debated, amended, and voted on all over again. None of this extension crap, or votes to repeal. Must be a mandatory end and the process must start and be justified all over again.

With one variation... The same variation as the old variation.

The last Democrat President's Justice Dept. tried to apply RICO statutes to anti-abortion protesters.

This Democrat President's DHS Secretary has already tried to apply Patriot Act provisions to anti-abortion protesters, tax protesters, Tea Party attendees,ObamaCare protesters, Cap & Tax protesters, senders of fishy Emails about ObamaCare, veterans of the US armed forces, supporters of the 2nd and 10th Amendments and other "Right Wing Extremists"... LINK

So, it should be no surprise that Dear Leader Chairman Maobama wants the Patriot Act extended... He just doesn't want to use it against al-Qaeda.
