J/K I doubt an upgrade in infantry small arms would have made a dynamic difference by even 1942. A few minor setbacks at best these guns alone may have caused with a slight uppage in casualties but the STG 44 can't stop a tank.

I disagree. German army tactics were built around the machine gun, with the infantry providing the base of fire protection for their automatic weapons squad. With the advent of every soldier having the potential of firing either semi, or automatic weapons fire with a Stug-44, this could change their entire tactical structure, had it been applied early enough.

Oh the Allies were very reactionary (especially the Americans) and would have come up their own counter measures I'm sure, even if the STG 44 was as earth shattering on the battlefield as some gun nuts claim (with some valid arguments of course).
I remember someone posting here a while ago something to the effect that: "thank god the US didn't go to war with the USSR after WWII because by 1947 they would've all had AK47's against our Garands and it would've been over".
Well, the Germans had StG44 in 1944 and were cranking out a lot more arms, equipment, and munitions than years prior, but that's not so effective against 500 and 1000 pound bombs.

it was Patton that wanted the German army rebuilt with USA equipment and prepared in case the USSR wanted something more. he knew there was still officers and men that could predict what the USSR might do for the future.

But yes, the reason why the Norman invasion was so successful is that while the Germans had better small arms, the allies had an overwhelming air force and much better technical equipment which enabled them obliterate any attempts to thrust the allies back into the channel. STG 44's didn't help Germany there.

I agree with you there, the lack of aircover over the beachs for the Germans was a major tactical loss for them, and not having the armored spearheads closer to the beachs was another fatal error. Poor planning by the Germans, and noone wanting to disturb the Fuhrers sleep was another.
The STG 44 range was around 300 meters more or less, it was more a street sweeper than anything, much better than a Bolt action Mauser!
Good at what it did..

I would have expected the US to switch the M1 carbine (another intermediate cartridge by the by), to the M2 fully automatic version as a stopgap if the SG 44 were sufficently effective. That would be one Allied response almost surely.
Bottom line: The SG 44 changes nothing.
