True at first but as The UK moves on as a poltical entity sans Scotland then I'll think you'll find things may well evolve. If a Tory government was in long enough I think you'll find it ousted at some point. Might make the labour party less dumbass when it comes to others people's money though...

A lot of the North will continue to vote Labour on principle, is that not enough to maintain something more like balance?

Hi Cope
Any change will be glacial.
The social/economic criteria in the vast majority country remain the same decade after decade. Only a few seats in the UK a true swing seats. Also your finding that the traditional Labour city wards are becoming less populated, thus there traditional support is becoming less concentrated and thus dissipating into traditional Tory wards.

Perhaps . Did Labour need Scotland to have a majority even in 97?

Hi Cope
Its hard to remove Scotland from the political map with its 72 non Conservative MP's (56 Labour, 10 Libs and 6 SNP) in 1997, and say how it may have effected the actual campaign beyond the physical number of MP's it contributed to the eventual Labour landslide.
