Just like to find out what your favourite Napoleonic picture, print or caricature would be.



It is September 18th, 1805, off Plymouth. Led by the 74-gun HMS Thunderer, with HMS Ajax astern, HMS Victory, with Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson aboard, begins her journey south to join the rest of the British fleet off Cadiz where the combined French and Spanish fleets lay blockaded. This was the prelude to the Battle of Trafalgar and the last time Nelson would see his beloved England.

The 95th rifles with general Craufurd, acting as rearguard on the retreat to Corunna




The painting shows the moment when, unable to return fire on her approach, the battered and bloodied HMS Victory finally breaks through the enemy line with a thunderous broadside, splintering the stern of the French flagship Bucentaure into a thousand pieces. The Victory then rammed the French Redoubtable, the two ships exchanging broadsides at point blank range.

"Battle of Friedland, 1807" by Ernest Meissonier. Napoleon with his general staff salutes the French 12th Cuirassier regiment who charge by during the battle of Friedland in 1807.




"Le Soir D'Jena" by Edouard Detaille.



French troops presenting the captured Prussian standards to Napoleon after the battle of Jena. The Prussian army fell back in disorder losing 11.000 killed or wounded and another 15.000 captured, compared to the French losses of 5.000.

"La Moskowa-Borodino 1812" by Mark Churms. Depicting French Carabinier Brigade ( 1st and 2nd Carabiniers ) charging at the battle of Borodino. The famous charge of France's 2nd Reserve Cavalry Corps against the Reavski Redoubt ( also known as the Great Redoubt ).




"Die Uberlebenden" by Mark Churms. Saxon Garde du corps ( heavy cavalry ) and the survivors of the French heavy cavalry attack on the Great Redoubt at the battle of Borodino, 1812.

"La Charge" by Mark Churms - Donop's cavalry at the battle of Waterloo, 1815. Napoleon's French 2nd and 3rd Cuirassier regiments from his reserve heavy cavalry corps are lead into action by their brigade commander ( General Donop ).

"A Chasseurs fate" - This stirring painting shows the Chasseurs a cheval ( light cavalry ) of the French Imperial Guard at the battle of Austerlitz, under the command of General Rapp, charging against the Lifeguard Hussar regiment ( Russian Imperial Guard ) and the Kostanetzki's battery. The Chasseurs along with Mamelukes drove off the Lifeguard regiment and managed to capture several guns.




"The melee" - French 1st Carabinier regiment against the Russian Iziumsk Hussar regiment during the battle of Borodino.

The two midshipmen that end up killing the offender see their admiral fall.


A powder monkey rushes through the hail of lead to supply his gun teams.


Two sailors assist the young Lieutenant Westphal, who is badly wounded and fainting in their arms.
Behind them, two sailors carry buckets of water up the companionway, to put out the fire on the
Redoutable, and stop it from spreading to the Victory, which is close alongside.


A group of sailors, one of them a grey-headed older man, are carrying away for treatment
a severely-wounded shipmate.


Two women and the ship's cook attend to another fallen sailor.

Zouave and AIrchallanged, great pics. Looking at the picture of the south gate of Hougoumont, posted by Zouave is that a rocket or howitzer shell flying towards the chateau in the top right, if it's a rocket it's going the wrong way.

I wonder which, if any of this painters, ever saw any real action? Who were the war painters? Are there any known to us?

It is just one part of the 360° Cyclorama of Waterloo, I don't know who painted it (maybe Philippoteaux, he was a specialist of these, made one of Gettysburg that's truly remarkable) nor which part of the battle it depicts, maybe the lancers counter-charge that mike mentioned in the Lancers thread. The guy on the white horse in the backgroung is none other than Nappy himself.

It's the Guard Red Lancers charging toward the squares between La Hay Sainte and Hugomont. It is a detail from a fresco by the military painters Robiquet, Malespina and Desvarreux, under the direction of Demoulin. The work measures 110 metres in circumference and 12 metres in height. Forming a panorama of the battle, the fresco is in a circular building on the battlefield of Waterloo. If you can stomach it (pukingly froggified in my 'umble opinion) get a copy of 'Waterloo' by Commandent Henry Lachouque, his version of the day's fisticuffs is a complete load of bollocks but the book's illustrations are absolutely superb.

The battle of Raszyn was fought in april 1809, between Austrian and Polish troops as a part of the war of the fifth coalition. The commander responsible for the defense of the Duchy of Warsaw was Prince Jozef Poniatowski. Outnumbered three to one, Poniatowski fought an outstanding defensive campaign, covering all of Napoleon's northern front while Napoleon faced off against the main Austrian army.
