Has anybody mentioned the Official Records of Civil War? It was known as "OR" and contains 128 volumes of after action reports, correspondence, maps, etc. made by both Union and Confederate armies.
Here is what I think is the free web version of the OR:
http://ehistory.osu.edu/osu/sources/records/
And if you feel like purchasing a set of OR volumes, then you can buy it for $70:

According to some reviewers on the Internet, the CD-ROM version is probably the best one out there. I've been thinking about buying it for my own research on the Civil War.

Dan,
I have a full set of the books (reprint edition) upstairs as well as the CD-ROM. I use the CD-ROM for two things: term searching and copy/pasting. Otherwise, I use the books.

I'm very tempted to purchase both books and CD-ROM, I just went through some of reports and correspondences in the web version, and they're fantastic! I've been dying to learn more about some of the battles and campaigns in depth, and this gives me a great opportunity to do that.

The OR's are the starting point for any serious Civil War research. Just keep in mind that there's lots of spin in them. Buying a set of the books ain't cheap, and they take up a LOT of room. If you're interested, though, let me know, and I will hook you up.

Just a quick story about this...
I started purchasing my set of OR's in 1993 or so. I couldn't afford to just purchase a set outright as we were newly married and I was still repaying my student loans. However, you could subscribe and purchase them at the rate of 4 volumes per month for $90 a month. It took the better part of three years to acquire the full set, at about $2600. About 60 days after I got the last set of four and paid the last bill, the CD-ROM came out. Needless to say, my wife was NOT amused......
Luckily, she loves books as much as I do....

Would like to see what Armchair General makes of the recently discovered remains in Fredericksburg. This is from a link in the English newspaper The Independent:
