my vote was for Ju-88. it's as versatile as Mosquito, they were used as bomber, reconaissance, heavy/night fighter, carried big guns. but i think Ju-88 was much more widely used than Mossie, more units produced, much more advanced weapons like shrage musik, powerful cannons, radar sets and torpedos. more than 16 thousand were built, for 7781 Mossies

the Ju-88 G-6 night fighter

The B-25, it was a good gun platform and played a role in more than a few Pacific battles.

I opted for the Mosquito, but could it reasonably called a "Medium" Bomber, in the same class as (say) the excellent B-25 ?

I vote PZL.37 Łoś. Though a slightly older design (first flight 1936), it had a bomb payload of 2,568 kg and unladen weight of 4,280 kg.

Oddly, I can't see another contender (Pe-2) on the list, as well as only one Japanese bomber.

It all depends on whom is doing the defining. Since the OP included Mossies and A-26s as mediums I split my vote. But personally I'd call them light bombers just like I consider the Wellington to be a Medium-Heavy bomber. I guess the same could be considered for the Mitsubishi Betty. It just depends on 1) your preference and 2) how a poll is worded. Just because somebody doesn't agree with your opinion than one needs to smile, tip your hat and carry on. These polls and $10 will get you a coffee a Starbucks.

Could you call a B17 a heavy bomber when at times she could only carry the Mosquito's bomb-load? Or should we call the B17 a medium-heavy?

What weight of bombs did the B25 or B26 carry? As for the JU88, she could only carry 6,000lbs of bombs with rocket assisted takeoff and a huge drop in performance.

Overloaded, iirc, the bomb tonnage was around 18,000lbs. Normal load was greater than 4,000lbs and short range it was around 8,000lbs. When talking about the B-17 just remember the bomb-bay was basically unchanged since roll out, Hence a 1935ish design.

A medium bomber is a plane that carries a medium bomb-load; and 4,000lbs is a medium bomb-load carried (un-assisted) by a twin engined aircraft

I refer you to the 'at times' quote.

I voted Ju 88, as it was around for most of the war. But I have nothing against the Mosquito (fantastic aircraft), B26 or B25.

Good additions, the PZL.37 Łoś was a good aircraft, but sadly wasn't produced in great enough numbers to make an impact in the war. The Petlyakov Pe-2 on the other hand should've been on the list and thanks for mentioning it. I felt the Betty was the best bomber design the Japanese had at the time. Fast, long range, decent payload, and could take a beating, but the Nakajima Ki-49 and the Mitsubishi Ki-67 should be mentioned as well.

The B-17 was originally designed as a long range maritime bomber. It was never envisioned as a strategic bomber. Time and events proved otherwise.

Martin B-26 Marauder

It had the lowest loss rate in the USAAF – Europe

An outstanding Bomber………. While the B-26 was a fast aircraft with better performance than the contemporary North American B-25 Mitchell its relatively small wing area and resulting high wing loading required an unprecedented landing speed

Note……….. The de Havilland Mosquito was not a MEDIUM Bomber ie it did not bombe from altitude in formation

Attack with aggression, but always have a plan of retreat”

I would place the Mosquito in the role of an attack bomber, rather than a medium bomber, although it excelled there early in the war.

So, for instance the Lancaster didn't bomb in formation at night, does this count it out as a bomber of any type? The Mosquito delivered bombs 'conventionally' from altitude on nuisance raids. How high up do you think it was safe enough to deliver a 4,000 cookie without the blast having an effect on the aircraft?
