That guy wasn't the best interviewer, but the tanks were interesting.

I would agree that the A7V was the better tank, except for one thing; it wasn't made to fight on the terrain where the fighting was.

That made it a dud, and its just as well that hardly any were made.

The account glossed over some of the A7Vs other deficiencies which included
  • the heat inside which was greater than even the MkV which limited the amount of time the crew could stay inside
  • poor driver visibility of obstacles in front. This coupled with the poor vertical climb ability of the track units meant that the tank often got ditched in quite small depressions
  • lateral instability - ie it fell over sideways very easily as happened in the first tank v tank action - coupled with poor driver view this was a real problem
  • the Holt suspension which permitted higher speed got very easily clogged in even mildly muddy conditions
  • armour plate problems. Germany was very good at producing thick cast armour plate as used on warships but had problems with thiner plate for armoured vehicles and a high proportion of the side plates for the A7V were faulty and had to be rejected

However the main reason for the limited production was that Ludendorff didn't believe in tanks and ensured that most A7Vs completed were unarmoured munitions carries for the heavy artillery. The Germans did have a scheme to build several hundred copies of the British MkIV but with an improved transmission so they could be driven by one man (like the MkV). However given the choice between using available engine production for this and using it for heavy artillery tractors the latter was preferred.

When I looked inside one it was mostly a rusty looking mess
