Petty Officer Josh Harris

Lexington resident, in Navy, dies in war zone

By Dan Galindo | Journal Reporter
Published: September 2, 2008
A Navy SEAL from Lexington was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday, the Navy said yesterday.
Petty Officer Josh Harris, 36, drowned after he was swept away during a nighttime river-crossing, according to a Navy news release and Harris' brother.
"My brother was defending our country the best way he knew how," the brother, Ranchor Harris III, said in an interview.
Harris said that his brother loved being a SEAL and accepted the risk involved.
"When you fight for freedom, that's the end of the deal," he said. "Every day there's a person like my brother out there who's keeping this country safe."
The Navy did not provide further details about the incident.
Family members told WGHP/FOX8 that Harris' safety harness came undone. His body was later found downstream.
SEALs take their name from being trained for missions involving sea, air and land.
Harris had worked his way through various SEAL assignments to the Naval Special Warfare Tactical Development and Evaluation Squadron Two, an elite team within the SEALs based near Virginia Beach, Va.
Harris graduated in 1990 from Lexington Senior High School, where he was a standout football player. His family said he went to Davidson College, graduating in 1994 with a degree in studio art. He then went to UNC Charlotte to study for a master's in architecture.
Ranchor Harris said that his brother decided to try to serve as a SEAL in 2000, a few months before he turned 29, which is the Navy's cutoff for acceptance into the SEALs.
Harris had been deployed to Iraq several times and earned several awards, including the Bronze Star medal.
He never talked about any of his awards, Harris said.
"He was an understated, reserved and very humble individual," Harris said. "He would say, ‘It was the team.'"
Harris is survived by his parents, Sam and Evelyn Harris, twin sister, Kiki Harris, his brother, and aunts and uncles.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Captain Bruce Hays

Star-Tribune capital bureau Tuesday, September 23, 2008

CHEYENNE -- Capt. Bruce Hays of Cheyenne is the first Wyoming National Hays of Cheyenne is the first Wyoming National Guard soldier killed in Afghanistan, the Guard announced Monday.

Hays, 42, was assigned to an Embedded Training Team to work with Afghanistan forces as a police mentoring team chief.

He died of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device in Gerdia Seria, Afghanistan. Hays and the other members of the ETT arrived in Afghanistan mid-August, the Guard said in a release.

The Department of Defense announced that three other soldiers were killed in the explosion, including two members of the Illinois National Guard and a soldier assigned to Fort Benning, Ga.
Major Gen. Ed Wright, Wyoming's adjutant general, said Hays was an outstanding citizen soldier who dedicated more than 17 years to the United States Army.

"We send our deepest sympathies to his family. This is a tragedy that touched all of us in the Wyoming National Guard. Capt. Hays was a member of our own family," Wright said. "We are offering all of the support and resources we have to his family and fellow guardsmen working through the grieving process."

Hays was married and had two young children and three stepchildren, according to Brig. Gen. Olin Oedekoven.

It was Hays' first tour in the Mideast.

"Personally I've known Bruce for a long time," Oedekoven said.

Most recently Hays was the company commander of the Signal Company in Laramie, his second company level command tour.

"He was very well-respected and known throughout the organization as highly technical and competent. And perhaps more importantly, a very decent person who exemplified the army values of honor, integrity and service," Oedekoven said.

Hays, he added, "is a significant loss for our organization in terms of a leader who we respected, who we considered our friend."

Hays is the fifth Wyoming Army National Guard soldier to die while in service during the Global War on Terrorism and the 27th military service member with Wyoming ties.

Hayes had been a full-time member of the Wyoming National Guard since 2000, with prior Army and Air Force service.

He was part of the information management office and worked in technology.

Col. Greg Porter, chief of staff for the Army and Air Guard, said Hays was very quiet and soft spoken.

"A good person. A good man. A good soldier," Porter said.

Hays moved to Cheyenne when he joined the guard full time, Porter said.

Hays' family could not be reached by phone late Monday afternoon. Their phone number listed in the Cheyenne directory was disconnected.

Funeral service arrangements are pending.

1st Lieutenant Mohsin A. Naqvi

Quote:
Fallen soldier memorialized in upstate NY

By RICHARD RICHTMYER |Associated Press Writer September 22, 2008 ALBANY, N.Y. - Muslim prayers joined American military honors in upstate New York as family, friends and fellow soldiers remembered Mohsin Naqvi, a U.S. Army officer killed in Afghanistan.

About 350 people gathered Monday for a Shia funeral service before his burial with full military honors in a nearby cemetery. Naqvi, who was born in Pakistan and came to the U.S. with his family as a child, was one of four soldiers killed by a roadside bomb while on patrol last week.

An Army honor guard from Fort Drum's 10th Mountain Division carried Naqvi's flag-draped coffin into a prayer hall on the outskirts of Albany, where mourners remembered the 26-year-old, who had been married in the same mosque.

"He was married here a day before he was deployed," said Shakil Virjee, a member of the mosque's board of trustees and a friend of the family.

Naqvi was born in Pakistan and came to America when he was 8 years old. His family settled in the Hudson Valley city of Newburgh, where he grew up and went to school. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen when he was 16.

His wife, Raazia, and her family are from the Albany area, and the Naqvis frequently traveled from Newburgh to worship at the mosque, Virjee said.

Naqvi joined the Army Reserve a few days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and went on to serve in Iraq. He later re-enlisted for active duty and become a first lieutenant.

During part of his military service, Naqvi was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company at Fort Benning in Georgia, where he worked under the command of Capt. Carl Purgerson.

"Lt. Naqvi was my (executive officer) for about six months," Purgerson said as he stood outside the mosque Monday. "He made it a joy to come to work, very dedicated and a true patriot to the core."

New York Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Eric Hunt also knew Naqvi, though they never served together. They were next door neighbors in Newburgh for years.

"I've known him since he was a teenager," Hunt said, fighting back tears as he spoke.

"Whenever he was home we'd get together and talk about Army stuff. We had that in common," Hunt said. "He was always cracking jokes. We went to his brother Hassan's high school graduation party last year, and he was the life of the party."

Some who knew Naqvi said he hoped his Muslim faith and heritage could help bridge cultural divides, but often struggled against people who questioned his patriotism.

"We were really proud of him joining the forces," said Aziz Ahsan, a Hudson Valley lawyer who survived the attack on the World Trade Center and is active in the area's Muslim community.

"He's the most patriotic person I've known, and he sacrificed his life for all Americans, not just Muslim Americans."

Chicago, IL. -- Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart had praise Thursday for a Cook County Jail correctional officer killed Wednesday while serving with the National Guard in Afghanistan.
“Officer Jason Vazquez was a giving person, as evidenced by his noble service to both the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. military,” Dart said in a release.

Vazquez, 24, was killed Wednesday while on duty in Afghanistan, according to the release. He also worked as a correctional officer with the sheriff’s department, working in Division 9, a maximum security area of the jail.

A 2002 graduate of Schurz High School on the Northwest Side, Vazquez attended Triton College before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he was trained in both military police and cannon crew duties, the release said. He achieved the rank of sergeant.

Vazquez received the Army Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and
Army Forces Reserve Medal.

He joined the Sheriff’s Department in November 2006 and went on military leave in March 2008.

He is survived by his father and a sister, who live in Chicago, and his mother and a brother in Miami.

“We are honored to have known him and are thankful for the selfless spirit by which he lived,” Dart said in the release.
