19th century illustration by Artur Grottger, a Polish artist. The soldiers featured in the scene are Kosciuszko's insurgents from the Polish uprising against Russia & Prussia in 1794. A war scythe was a long pole weapon that was used in slashing overhead attacks. A peasant weapon, it was very popular with commoners who could not afford firearms or armor. The most celebrated Polish scythe attack was during the battle of Raclawice in 1974 where Polish peasantry with scythes overran a Russian artillery battery and cut the defenders to ribbons. If a man took a war scythe slash to the chest it would cut through the sternum and the ribs exposing the chest cavity. Others had their legs neatly severed at the hips. A most brutal and ugly weapon it was; very un-sportsman like when compared to the beautiful and slim rapiers used by nobility.

The name Kosciuszko is well known in Australia thanks to our highest mountain, Mt Kosciusko named by the polish Explorer/surveyor Paul Strzelecki. Being aussies of course the Pronounciation of the name would be mutilated beyond recognition to any Pole.

Jagiellon Poland

Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

The 17th century saw fierce rivalry between the then major Eastern European powers – Sweden, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire. During the 18th century, European powers (most frequently consisting of Russia, Sweden, Prussia and Saxony) fought several wars for the control of the territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. At the end of the 18th century, some Poles attempted to defend Poland from growing foreign influence in the country's internal affairs. These late attempts to preserve independence eventually failed, ultimately ending in Poland's partition and the final dissolution of the remains of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Second Polish Republic and World War II

Polish uprisings

The Polish concept of uprising is derived from the system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, where the szlachta was supposed to play an important role in the governing of the country. Unsatisfied noblemen were allowed to form Rokosz, the legal rebellion against government. Rebellion movements were shaped in the Confederation, a council whose members voted.

Following the example, national uprising were perfectly organised movements against the oppressors. Many of them occurred during the century of uprisings (1764–1864), and were, with small exceptions, all defeated.
