I didn't know Frogfoots could absorb that much damage. I mean that's almost A-10 level right there.

Yep, they are hard to kill. It's been known since the war in Afghanistan, when they frequently arrived home in similar condition.

Well, it seems that we need to provide the Georgians more powerful anti-aircraft missiles to defend them against such tough Russian aircraft.

How does a couple of batteries of Patriots sound?

Seriously now, the two types of damages are different. The A-10 suffered from AA damage, possibly 23mm.

The Su-25 damage is more localised but also more serious, and it probably came from a shoulder-fired SAM. From the location of the damage, it is likely that it was a heat-seeking missile with an impact fuse. If it had been a heavier SAM, the aircraft would probably not have returned to base.

The pilot has been lucky in the sense that the missile hit the Su-25 at a less than critical point in its structure. Almost no critical systems are placed down there. If it had hit an engine, the plane would probably have been set on fire and it would have gone down, tough or not. Looks impressive, but the plane survived more through luck than any inherent toughness.
