I thought that the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division was already stationed at Fort Riley with the 1st & 2nd Brigade of that Division being stationed in Germany.

Your right, but its the older version of it. To save money in the transfer, its going to re-flag as one of the Brigades of the 1st ID. Then one of the Brigades currently at Fort Hood will re-flag to the 3rd Brigade of the 1st AD when it comes back from Iraq.
The reflagging of the 1st AD is sort of wild and a bit confusing. One day they will resettle at Fort Bliss.
The 172nd SBCT had barely gotten off the airplane in Alaska when they were reflagged. Apparently all of the battalions were reflagged at the same ceremony. Not a real morale builder for battalions just returning from combat and then inactivated.
Wonder what will happen to the 2-1 , 1-17 and 4-23 Infantry and 4-14 Cavalry? Reassigned or just gone? Or does anybody care?
4th Heavy Brigade Combat Team 1st Cavalry Division will be reflagged as 4th Brigade Combat Team 1st Armor Division.(Unit is currently on one year tour in Iraq
2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division will be reflagged as 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team 4th Infantry Division. (Unit is currently on one year tour in Iraq)
1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team 25th Infantry Division has been reflagged as 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division.(will be reflagged as 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Tean 2nd Infantry Division after 2nd BCT reflagged at Ft Carson as 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team 4th Infantry Division)
2nd Cavalry Stryker Brigade Combat Team has been reflagged as 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division.
New 4th Heavy Brigade Combat Team 1st Cavalry will be activated witnin next year under new plans.
New 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division will be activated at Ft Know, KY, within the next year.
2nd Brigade 1st Infantry Division is currrently on one year tour in Iraq. The
3rd Brigade 1st Armor Division is currently stationed at Ft Riley, KS. It is to be reflagged to 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division. Look for the current 2nd Brigade 1st Infantry Divison to return to Germany and when move to Ft Bliss in 2008 as Heavy Brigade Combat Team 1st Armor Division.
As of Dec 22, 06 the 1st HBCT 1st Inf Div is at Fort Riley with the mission to train MTT advisors for Iraq. the 4th IBCT lst Inf Div was formed this year at Fort Riley and will deploy to Iraq early next year, if surge option is approved by Bush. 2nd BCT 1st Inf Div is deployed in Iraq and is schedule to return to Germany in March 07 prior to returning to the US with new return date of 2007. 3rd BCT 1st Inf Div is based in Germany in cadre strenght attached to the 1st Arm Div.
According to a Army press release on 21 Dec 06 the 3rd IBCT 1st Inf Div will stand up at Fort Hood and deploy to Iraq and then return to Fort Knox. The cadre troops inGermany must be returning to Fort Hood to form corp of new IBCT.
The 3rd BCT 1st Arm Div is based at Fort Riley and listed as attached to 1st Inf Div. The press release indicated that a number of these troops will be assigned to the 1st HBCT 1st Inf Div to help in the MTT mission. The unit will be reflagged late next year as 2nd HBCT 1st Inf Div. It also indicated that number of troops from that brigade will be returning to Fort Riley. These could be individual brigade units that have been deployed to Iraq or Afgan.
The 2nd BCT 1st Inf Div will complete 12 months in Iraq in March 07 but could be extended 90 days.
The question is what Happens to the 2nd BCT 1st Inf Div? The unit could be sent to Fort Hood and reflagg to replace a 4th Inf Div HBCT being reflagged as HBCT 4th Inf Div that will lose a HBCT to the 1st Armor Div when is moves to Fort Bliss.
The 1st Armor Divison is sheduled to return from Germany to Fort Bliss in 2008/2009. The 1st BCT 1st Armor Div is in Iraq and it's tour has be extended until March 2007. It will return to Gemany and then move to Fort Bliss.
The 2nd BCT 1st Armor Div is also in Iraq and will be returning to Germany in 2007. Look for its tour to be extend 90 days. After its back in Germany it also will be moving to Fort Bliss.
THe 3rd BCT 1st Armor Div is at Fort Riley. It will be reflagged as the 2nd HBCT 1st Inf Div in late 2007.
The 4th HBCTmust be formed in the future and assigned to the 1st Armor Div at Fort Bliss. It could be reflagged HBCT 4th Inf Div or reflagged 2nd Bde 1st Inf Div.
Joey: Thanks for the package on the 1st Armored Division. Looks like that will work
Also it appears that the 25th ID will form a 5th BCT. takes care of a number of battalions which whould have fallen out of the bucket
The Institute for Heraldry and the Center for Military History must be going nuts trying to keep track of all the reflaggings.
Betcha money they have a plan set up up in case the Army is given the order to expand, but it'll take some doing with the reflaggings to make sure the same unit id isn't formed twice.
At least with the navy, you can't reflag a ships name every year.
The CMH has plans in the can for flagging all kinds of unit expansions needed. They did pretty well in Viet-Nam.
Might add a division headquarters, but best build BCTs to existing divisions.
No need for add to support base. Too heavy anyway.
They messed up once in Viet Nam. They grouped three Light Infantry Brigades together and called it the 23rd Americal Division. The Americal was formed in WW 2 from National Guard Regiments shipped to the South Pacific. They could have chosen one of the regular Division numbers not in use.
We don't need more Regular Division HQs. It is more Infantry Brigades we need. If you are referring to National Guard Division HQs I can go with that. The trouble will be in forming multi-state divisions. Which state gets the commanding General? They also should be forming more Brigades in California, Texas and Pennsylvania to give these In-state Divisions a local Fourth Brigade.
Your right, but its the older version of it. To save money in the transfer, its going to re-flag as one of the Brigades of the 1st ID. Then one of the Brigades currently at Fort Hood will re-flag to the 3rd Brigade of the 1st AD when it comes back from Iraq.
konev
I was pointing out a mistake in the article posted. The articles states that soldiers of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division were set to arrive at Fort Riley sometime in the coming year. They are already there.

Looks like the battalions of the former 172nd BCT will resurface at Fort Lewis or Fort Carson as 2nd BCT, 2nd Infantry Division.Amazing sleight of hand by CMH.
