Why does the French Army fight the way it does?

Messieurs et mesdames
most of you know I am almost always interested in the French army’s past and present.
Recently I came across this article on a book that actually explains a great deal about how the French army fought and still operates the way it does.
I must admit that I never came across this book and cannot remember having it heard mentioned. The article on the book I found quite recognisable in a couple of ways, in others less so, but that may be due to my relatively limited experience as a liaison officer to the French army.
Anyway I think it is an interesting and insightful read.

I see that the movie that was made after Schoendorfer's novel was discussed at ACG's already nine years ago here

The "317eme section" is a masterpiece.Plain and simple.
He realized the docu "the Anderson section" during the Vietnam war ,some years later.

Jeroen ,I replied to your article on Facebook.
Read it, thanks.
Really loved your comparison between the Hugo Pratt comic and the French Way of Warfare.
Quite apt IMO

One thing to keep in mind when talking about the French way ,is our deep "love" ,for the romantic war.
I mean ,the best example is the war we fought in the deserts of northern Africa , with nothing but a bunch of rather brave guys , seeking for some action in a rather old fashioned way .What a better movie than "un taxi pour Tobrouk" for illustrating what I mean ,or Hugo Pratt's "the scorpions of the desert " comic .

Interesting thread, owe you a rep Jeroen.

After first read or so, I would like to see more historical depth (at least back to the Franco-Prussian war) on the culture of the French Army and their expeditionary experiences in proper context. The author mentions WWI, but WWII (with Bloch's perspective) also has implications. The French applied their lessons from Indochina in Algeria (read Larteguy) and were winning until French metropolitan politics capped the effort. The French use in expeditionary operations of the French Foreign Legion is unique.

What I think we are getting in the article is a social scientist rather than a military historian handling the subject. I rarely find a political scientist who does not cherry pick in handling history.
