As a matter of interest, last month I asked two retired US Navy destroyer captains the following question by email-
"Sir, if a warship Captain retires to his cabin for a sleep or a lie down if he's temporarily ill, would the crew be fully trained and capable of defending the ship without him if it came under sudden attack?"

and one replied with-

"They are supposed to be trained to react to a threat or a possible collision.
The officer of the deck has the sack to act in the CO's absence, knowing when and if to call him, time permitting.
When I was commanding officer I had one OOD I relied on and completely trusted, one who I seldom left the bridge when he was OOD, and two who were pretty reliable in most circumstances."


And the other one replied-

"That's an easy question because it has happened. The Tactical Action Officer (TAO) on any ship is fully authorized to release weapons in self-defense -- and then notify the captain. There is always a qualified TAO on watch -- as well as all of the crew required to fire any defensive weapon. Even with modern and very fast anti-ship missiles, there is sufficient time (admittedly tens of seconds in some cases) for the TAO to walk through his doctrine and make the decision. But the default is always to act in self-defense, and it does work that way."

There's a rumor that the freighter the hit the U.S.S. McCain might have had it's navigation systems hacked.

Even if the freighter's navigation system had been "hacked" the possibility that the McCain could not have avoided the freighter is about 0.1%. Of course this assumes that the McCain's lookouts, bridge watch, and CIC were not asleep.

I'll up the wager. Even if the the freighter had tried to ram the McCain on purpose IT should been a miss. Being from the Army, I could have avoided the collision as OOD.

Indeed! That was just poor seamanship! I served on that class of ship; the Arleigh Burke class destroyers can go from dead in the water to over thirty knots in about two nautical miles as I recall. That collision should never have occurred.

The things that has me upset about both these incidents is that both ships are capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in flight. I wonder if the North Koreans have a hand in any of these accidents?

Doug, if they can't sail through the Straits of Malacca without missing civilian vessels, why would you trust them to shoot down ballistic missiles?
