The shadow of the wings on the ground were the give away; it made me search for "forward sweep wing prototype", which made me find the XFG-1 glider.

Probably one of those Republic Thunderbolt prototypes. The prop on that aircraft has more than 4 blades to it and the interior is pained in that awful blue-green colour

Fisher P75 Eagle.

TAG image of

AAF Ser. No. 44-44553

Before restoration?

And taken in the repair workshop/hangar?

Quote:
AAF Ser. No. 44-44553 - National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.[4] For many years this aircraft was on display in the museum's Experimental Aircraft Gallery. Extensive deterioration of the airframe was discovered by the staff in 1999, which forced the Museum to undertake a full restoration of the aircraft. The work has been completed and the aircraft returned to display in the museum's Experimental Aircraft Gallery.

Quote:
The last production P-75A (serial number 44-44553) is on display in the Annex at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Museum in Dayton, Ohio. I saw it there in June of 1992. It was in fairly good shape, but needs some restoration work. This was apparently the aircraft that had been scavenged to keep the other P-75s flying, so more than a few things may be missing.
http://www.joebaugher.com/usaf_fighters/p75.html

The image I link to below:

after restoration

http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Upc...to/2001511355/

From the af.mil site some excellent images:

http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Vis...r-p-75a-eagle/

And showing the engine/transmission layout with two driveshafts leading to the gearbox- hence the unusual foot pedal/footrest covering the propshaft universal joints.

It makes sense now.

Unless I am mistaken, my .af mil source quoted in the previous post above suggests that the surviving example was actually one of the six production(not prototype) models completed.

Quote:
Fisher continued development of the design with the heavily-modified P-75A. By the fall of 1944, however, the U.S. Army Air Forces already had capable escort aircraft like the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt, and it canceled the order for 2,500 P-75As. Only eight XP-75s and six P-75As were built.

I was trying to make it easier rather than saying it was a production plane. I think that would have confused people more.

And, yes, it is the P-75 Eagle. An interesting plane. Used a coupled Allison engine consisting of two 1710 engines on a common block.
