They were of some small help to the Allies in 1944-45. That was with ethusiastic crews, industrial assisitance from the US = refits in US dockyards, and pleantiful fuel.

Politically unreliable crews, extreme fuel shortages, shortages of material for repairs, frequent RAF & then US AAF attacks. The Germans gain far less than the Allies did.

If the French Fleets had openly gone over to the Germans....at least they would have eventually been sunk in battle....a more honorable end than scuttling.

A good chunk ended up sunk in battle, and against the British and later US. I would point out the French ships didn't perform all that well either.
