Cool the climate down a bit, kill a bunch of crazies (and innocents) and go from there.

Well that is about every piece of electronic equipment that is not hardened against EMP. Just for example every electrical distribution system in the US.

NKs got very little in the way of electronic grids to be damaged

It's comforting to know that designing and building an ICBM is not easy.... but the North Koreans are making great strides with each test launch.

Why It's So Hard To Build an ICBM
It's not just North Korea that has struggled with the technology.

As a matter of interest this is the route an ICBM fom NK to USA would take.
The Russkis might not be too happy about it overflying part of their country, and neither would the Canucks..
(The orange line along the Alaskan border is the SAM defence line up there)-

Are you sure ?

I seem to remember vaguely nothing ever follows a straight line on a map - I suspect you''d have a curve there..

Not that it matters much

Flights from Korea to Washington DC pass over Japan and that's it before they cross the US west coast. Someone needs to tell the Daily mail about Mercator's projection and the so forth. You can't take a two dimensional picture of the globe and just draw lines on it - it doesn't work. Tells one a lot about the general level of intelligence /education amongst DM journalists and editors - beut we knew that anyway.

See route when plotted on Mercator which take the 3 dimenesional globe and converts it to a flat map. NK missile would only need to cross Canadian airspace to hit New England.

Crank up your google earth and spin the cyber-globe so you're looking top down on the route between NK and USA (or even better get a real globe in your hands and hold one end of a piece of string on NK and the other end on USA) and you'll see it's a straight line over Alaska and Canada..
Same with the London to NY air route, airliners don't fly straight due west to America, they fly northwest over Scotland at the start of their journey to take into account the curvature of the earth..

PS- and if Russia ever launches a big ICBM attack they'll come over the north pole and Canada to clobber the USA, they're en route in this still from the film "The Day After"-

The polar bears will get a ringside seat and think- "Some crazy sh*t going on up there!"

Yes! I've been saying for years we shouldn't forget there are other ways to deliver nuke warheads besides ICBM's!
For example a sub could sneak up and deposit a nuke on the seabed just offshore of one of our coastal cities on a time fuse then skedaddle, letting the blast wave, fireball, tsunami and radioactive spray do its work..

Interesting article on the 38 North site. Seems the yield was closer to 250 mega tons. Most seem to be satisfied that it was a Hydrogen bomb.

http://www.38north.org/2017/09/punggye091217
Quote:
At the time of 38 North’s first report on the sixth nuclear test, the preliminary seismic magnitude estimates varied from 5.8, as published by both the CTBTO and NORSAR, to 6.3 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). More recently, both the CTBTO and NORSAR have officially revised their estimates upward to 6.1. This revision is significant because, rather than providing an equivalent yield of about 120 kilotons derived from the lower magnitude estimates, the application of standard formula with appropriate constants shows that the yield can now be estimated to have been roughly 250 kilotons (one quarter megaton). This large explosive yield is also quite close to what 38 North had previously determined to be the maximum estimated containable yield for the Punggye-ri test site.
Quote:
Some of North Korea’s key claims, such as having conducted a large underground nuclear test (with a device capable of yielding “hundreds of kilotons”) have apparently now been corroborated, and evidently including the claim of having detonated a “hydrogen” bomb: “The United States has tentatively concluded that North Korea detonated an H-bomb over the weekend, as the regime has claimed, a senior U.S. administration official said Thursday.” However, the claim that no radioactivity was released may not be true. Detection of radioactive xenon-133 has been since reported in South Korea, although the official statement by the South Korean Nuclear Safety Agency was that, “The agency is currently tracking down the inflow of the material to conclude whether it is a result of the nuclear test.”
