Well ok, what book would you recommend to someone who knows nuthin' about your civil war but wants to read one that covers the alpha and omega of it, including the prelude?
I can imagine there being a standard publication that is pretty unanimously considered a classic piece of work.
I wouldn't be interested in the exact number of soldiers at any given date of every regiment at that date; rather I'd see how and why things evolved and how they were connected, and how they led to each next event.

thanks all.

Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson gets my vote.

Second for Battle Cry Of Freedom. Excellent book.

If you can find None Died In Vain: The Saga Of The Civil War by Robert Leckie, I don't think you'd be disappointed. It's a well written one volume overview of the Civil War that's a faster read than Battle Cry.

Battle Cry Of Freedom is the better of the two books though.

Third for Battle Cry of Freedom.

Also a very strong recommendation for Bruce Catton, especially for his trilogy on the Army of the Potomac.

An American Iliad by Charles Roland. Much shorter read than Battle Cry, but very good.

Battle Cry Of Freedom ordered. Ebay is my friend.
Tempted by the leather bound 2 volume edition but common sense prevailed.

thanks all !

Battle Cry of Freedom fourth-ed!

I'm half way through Sear's new book on the army of the Potomac. It is excellent, par usual, his only fib is his continued insistence that McClellan sent a noon telegraph to Lincoln regarding the lost order, which simply is not the case.

It was sent at midnight. McClellan, for all his faults (and there were many) did not dawdle in the Maryland campaign until he came to the climax....

Grant by Ron Chernow came in the mail today and from a brief, cursory look, it appears to be an excellent biography, and quite long.
