VDV (Airborne) Day in Russia

August 2 was Airborne Forces Day in Russia colloquially known as the VDV.

"Никто, кроме нас!" (English: "Nobody, but us!")

These are the soldiers that are being relied upon heavily for the new era of warfare - smaller unit sizes of well equipped, trained and supported troops. They've seen action in all of Russia's conflicts.

Some interesting websites on this sort-of unique Russian troop type:

While we don't know the exact TO&E of these units particularly as they are deployed but they are getting significant budget:

Ukraine and other ex-Soviet Union countries also employ these troop types and they have the reputation of being effective.

Although different than U.S. Airborne units, through stories told by my father (506th and 82nd) I've gained quite a bit of respect for these types of infantry units.
