Effectiveness of psychological torture

I was wondering if there is any evidence of the effectiveness of this in either eliciting information or even better turning an enemy agent. By psychological torture I mean anything that does not actually physically injure or inflict pain on the terrorist. ( excludes measures such as water boarding).

Your call.

On the fifth day of the invasion, Noriega and four others took sanctuary in the Apostolic Nunciature, the Holy See's embassy in Panama.[48][49] Having threatened to flee to the countryside and lead guerrilla warfare if not given refuge, he instead turned over the majority of his weapons, and requested sanctuary from Monsignor Laboa.[48] He spent his time in a "stark" room with no air conditioning or television, reading the Bible for the duration of his stay.[48]
Prevented by treaty from invading the embassy of the Holy See, U.S. soldiers erected a perimeter around the Nunciature. Psychological warfare was used in an attempt to dislodge him, including blaring rock music, and turning a nearby field into a helicopter landing zone. After ten days of Operation Nifty Package, Noriega surrendered on January 3, 1990.[2][50] He was detained as a prisoner of war, and later taken to the United States.[1][17]

One instance of it working, does it work all the time? I'd say no, but sometimes yes.

I do not believe that loud music and bright lights should count, as they induce a physiological response; sleep deprivation should probably also be disqualified.

IMO, psychological torture should be restricted to those items that only affect the mental health. For example, Tokyo Rose broadcasts and the propaganda leaflets dropped encourage the other side to surrender - things that break hearts and spirits, not bodies.

I doubt any agent would remain effective after being turned via psychological torture, broken spirit isn't worth much.

....I thought I read where the Germans used what could be psychological torture on US airmen....one method was that they would keep their rooms uncomfortably hot--not super hot, but hot enough to be uncomfortable...
....I work in a place without air conditioning and at the end of some super hot days [ 95-105 ] , I feel worn out mentally...mentally lazy...not so much as physically tired, but mentally tired/etc.....mentally weak
...I would say mental torture is more efficient than physical

Scharff didn't use physical torture though
