Attack on Raqqa

A simultaneous attack with the move on Mosul as expected, not by the forces I expected though, I figured it would be regime forces, Iranian militia and Russian air support.

Now it appears to be Sunni militia, Kurdish nationalists and Allied air support.

What happened here ?

Quote:
A U.S.-backed alliance of Syrian armed groups has launched an operation to retake the northern city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of Islamic State in Syria, the group said on Sunday.

The new offensive ratchets up pressure on Islamic State at a critical moment, with its fighters already battling an assault by Iraqi security forces on their remaining Iraqi stronghold in the northern city of Mosul.

As I said elsewhere Russia doesn't have any real interest in Raqqa as it isn't really that much of a threat to the Syrian regime and the Russian would rather foreign fighters stayed in Raqqa than returned home (many to the Russian Federation) and caused problems there. Daesh has been more of a threat to the Kurds and the moderate Syrian opposition. Some have even said that the regime has deliberately avoided targeting them for this reason. Russian bombing of Raqqa appears to have been more token than anything else. Its a good excuse for their Syrian intervention.

The Reuters article is a classic example of nonsense : there is NO such thing as "Syrian Democratic Forces " : the SDF is as democratic as was the peoples democratic republic of Poland, East Germany ,etc ...

It is astounding that Liberals are believing criminals when they call themselves democratic .

Words have no meaning in the Middle East .

Fair enough - but someone is attacking Raqqa and it ain't the Syrian government, the Iranians or the Russians.

Those are the ones that we were promised here on the ACG, would defeat IS in Syria.

My question is, where are they ?

Do we expect them to come up from the south later ?

Or do they not care as has been suggested above ?

Or is there a third explanation ?

The question is : who are they ?

There is no Free Syrian Army : it is not free, it isn't an army and I doubt there are many Syrians in it . Its members fought against each other and against the Kurds .

The Kurds also fought against each other and against the FSA .

What will do this unnatural coalition if Rakka is occupied (the occupation of Rakka is dubious as Turkey will intervene to prevent the Kurds to enter the city ) ?

Probably the coalition will fall apart and they all will fight again each other,as usual .

Most of them are Sunni, now fighting against Sunni ISIS , and later fighting against each other, but as usual, Washington informed by the media will continue to claim that it is a war between the gooddies and the baddies (John Wayne against Lee Marvin ) and will continue to wast the money of the taxpayer .

Ah , the Iranians, who ,following the Western media, were fighting against ISIS;probably they are playing cards and drinking tea .

Why is the Russian airforce absent ? Maybe Turkey is protesting and prefers that Rakka remains the capital of ISIS .

In august of this year, Turkey started an offensive against the SDF,and one of the 9 groups of the SDF belongs also to the FSA . which is fighting against the SDF .

The truth is that all these groups have two caps : the SDF cap and the FSA cap and that these caps are used following the circumstances and the amount of $ from Washington .

Nothing special : in Flanders one would use the term of "kazakkendraaiers ".

There has never been unified FSA. That some groups call themselves FSA doesn't mean that they allied with other FSA groups. Most "FSA" groups fighting with Kurds in SDF have always been fighting with with kurds. Jaish al Thuwar is largest nominally FSA group within SDF and they have been always friendly with YPG. As for SDF being unnatural coalition it held together when Turkey attacked it and for SDF side it was Arab components like Jaish al Thuwar which bore brunt of fighting. Only one small group of about hundred fighters switched sides to Turkey.

FSA doesn't exist and has never existed nor will it ever exist. That some factions in civil war used call themselves with same name does not mean that they were part of organization.

raqqa offensive

Don't expect too much from this Raqqa offensive. I doubt that the SDF can/will use much forces for Raqqa considering the confrontations with Turkey.

Trump probably won't lend much air support.

I am expecting small scale attacks to pin down ISIS troops in order to conquer some useful infrastructure and to help out the attack on Mosul. It is unlikely that the SDF will attack the city of Raqqa.
