Good point, but we're talking about the grammar part.
Is "drink-driver" grammatically correct?

Yes.

I have given you an example of its usage by a government department in an English-speaking country as proof.

I don't have the time or inclination to read back through this thread in it's entirety but one misuse that bugs me is using "stood" instead of "standing", for example "I was stood there looking at him" rather than "I was standing there looking at him".

Don't tell me you believe that all the declarations from Australian bureaucrats ,for instance, are invariably grammatically correct.

That one I get. It should be "I stood there looking at him." The ones I can't figure unless both are correct are the following:

Hercules drank the river dry.

Hercules drunk the river dry.

Or:

He drank a bottle of beer.

He drunk a bottle of beer.

Actually, I was trying to help but be subtle at the same time.

drank
is the past tense of drink; drunk is the past participle.
thus drank is used in simple past constructions, while drunk is used with compound past constructions and as a verbal adjective.

hence
Hercules drank from the river.
but
Hercules had drunk from the river
Hercules has drunk too much
Hercules is drunk

blame this construction on our Germanic forbears...

The crew are going to work.

The crew is going to work.

I've seen the following written also in reference to rock groups:

U2 are going on tour.

U2 is going on tour.

Are both right?

"Don't you disrespect me" should be "Don't be disrespectful toward me".

"Addicting" (an verb) used instead of "Addictive" (an adjective).

I'm no grammarian, isn't crew a singular noun despite the fact it includes having more than one person? It's similar to "group". You don't say, "Group are going to work." It isn't grammatically correct.

But it is grammatically correct to say "The crews are going to work." That is if there are more than one team with different duties doing the work.

1.) The damage control crews are working overtime to repair hull breach and pumping out water.

2.) The damage control crew is working overtime to repair hull breach and pumping out water.

Both sentences imply different meanings. In the first one, it implies there are more than one team with different duties working toward a single goal, which is to get the ship fixed. But all teams are classified under damage control. In the second part, it implies there is a single crew with members with different tasks but all working together toward getting the ship fixed, rather than different teams attending to different aspects of damage control. Both parts imply a different kind of command and control related to damage control.

So to answer your question, if U2 is composed of a single group with different members, then technically it's still a singular group,, so you should use single verb, as in U2 is going to work. Therefore, I think saying U2 are going on tour is technically wrong if it's not made up of different rock groups, unless you add s to U2, as in U2s, then yeah, maybe it is written properly.

But if it were me, I'd feel more comfortable writing U2 is going on tour, since U2 is made up of one rock group composed of different band members.
