Spanish Legion Today (Photo)

This was one of Franco's elite formations used to crush the Bolshevik rebellion in Spain during the Civil War.

EDIT: most of the image links disappeared so I added new photos. What's up with the ceremonial goat? Also, in some photos they have ceremonial monkeys.

Depends on the point of view. Conservatives saw the anarchists and the Bolsheviks who committed murder of catholic nuns, the desecration of churches, the murder of wealthy farmers and illegal seizure of their lands, as a rebellion against society. This was not merely defense against the army. This was an attempt at a Bolshevik revolution. The army coup probably provided a pretext.

The army had rebelled against the Republic but the communists and anarchists had rebelled against society itself. Worst of all, the communists did what they did in a treasonous pact with the USSR, the arch-enemy of the European civilization.

The Basques wanted to secede from Spain and establish their own separatist state.

This begs the question who has really rebelled against the Spanish society, and attempted to destroy ancient traditions and the statehood, and who was the guarantor of law and order?

The timeline of events supports your hypothesis that the army rebelled first against the legal government that was known as "the Republic"

Monster Zero, As I recall Franco's forces were the Nationalists, and the Republican side included the Anarchists, Trotskyites, and Communists. I believe the Basques fought on both sides. A professor of mine who had served in the Republican stated that many on the Republican side supported the communists not out of any belief in Marxism, but in fear of the Anarchists and their paranoia. An American professor (Carl Marzani) characterized the Anarchists as the craziest and bravest men in the world, but totally incompetent as soldiers. As soon as any man was nominated to command one of their "Centuries" he was bound to be accused of egotism and executed. They were ore concerned with 'purifying' their ranks than in fighting the enemy. One brilliant exception was Cypriano Mera. On the P.O.U.M. side, I had a soft spot for Mika Etchebehere.

Do you have anything on the 5th Regiment? I've always suspected their 'fame' was largely due to over-publicity by the Communists.

How would bombing civilian refugees on the coast road out of Malaga relate to preserving the values of 'society' and European civilisation? Guernica

Anyway, while the uniforms are a little homoerotic (surely not...) the Lgion on parade is impressive.

I know, there is fantastic material on YouTube, especially the Spanish documentary by Granada Studios.

P.O.U.M was an anti-Stalinist communist party that rejected the personality cult as a deviation from communism. I think novelist George Orwell fought with P.O.U.M.

Naturally that made P.O.U.M. marked for death by the Soviets and their lackeys.

There were also anti-Franco socialist groups that were formally calling themselves "liberal democrats" but when you joined them you realized they were almost exclusively Bolshevik, under Russian control, and those members who didn't accept this found themselves marginalized.

It goes without saying that those are parade uniforms, and a few of the photos are of a band. Those types of uniforms tend to be gaudier in every army.

As to who rebelled against whom, the democratically elected government was the Republican one - obviously. The generals launched a military coup against the legitimate government. The legitimate government, having been elected by a majority of the Spaniards, also obviously represented Spanish society at large, while the renegade generals did not.
Spain had chosen change over conservation, and if the conservatives had to resort to a coup, civil war, and hundreds of thousands of deaths, it was because they lacked the majority to maintain the status quo by peaceful means, including law and order.
