Neptune's Inferno - The Navy At Guadalcanal

I have read more than a couple of fictional books on Guadalcanal and it seems that the prevailing story-line about the Navy was that they cut and ran. When I ran across this book I decided to see what the real story was. It is an excellent book that shows the faults of the US Navy during the early period of WWII and the drastic learning experience and the price that they paid for learning how to conduct surface warfare against a highly effective Japanese Navy with their own issues.
I highly recommend it to those that are interested in the subject. Excellent book so far (only about 1/4 of the way through it).

I have it and have read it a couple of times. It took time to replace some of the peacetime officers with fighting officers. My Grandmother lost a brother when the USS Strong was caught napping one night and was struck by a Long Lance in the engine room.

Concur with the comments in the OP. Reading the AARs was highly informative, but Hornfischer put it all together.

Several of her depth charges exploded, causing further injuries and loss of life. Forty-six men perished with the ship. Her name was struck from the Navy list on 15 July 1943. The fatal torpedo was from a salvo fired by the Japanese destroyers, led by Niizuki, from a distance of 11 nautical miles (20 km).

My poor uncle was stationed in the engine room. When the steam lines are cut by explosion, it does not matter if the depth charges cook off. His grave marker is on Palawan, where my Dad was able to visit.

I agree. It is an excellent read. Hornfischer writes well and his opinions are sound. He is pretty brutal on several leaders, e.g. Ghormley. You really get a feel for the chaos of the night battles. It is the best book I have read on the naval battles off Guadalcanal. A good companion is Ian Toll's "Pacific Crucible".

I've read the book, great read. Many faulted Fletcher, but he had to protect the few Carriers, and was perhaps too cautious. Bull Halsey's announcement as Commander was something even the Marines in Guadalcannal were overjoyed with, despite their dire state. they knew Fighting Bull would take it to the Nips,. To Pruitt, my respects to you're Uncle who served us bravely!

The Navy didn't run, but the campaign sorely exposed the weakness of the peacetime training.

Poor station-keeping, poor contingency planning, poor watch-keeping, and above all a failure to emphasize training for night actions. The latter is especially unforgivable given that the USN knew the IJN trained to fight at night.

Good story about Halsey but he had no fighting rep by the time the Canal was being fought.
