Seriously, they're training together on a regular basis for years now , iirc.
Nichols is the specialist in this topic , may be he will reply
I'm not a specialist, but naturally...I have a story related to this...
The Foreign Legion was running a course similar to this along the border of Central African Republic and the Congo in 1993. It was also a week long but I only slept there one night.....my primary duty at that time was as a Detachment Commander at the Embassy.....not doing the fun infantry stuff.
I have done training at the Jungle Warfare Schools in Panama, Philippines, and the Northern Training Area in Okinawa. Personally I don't consider Okinawa as true jungle, it is only double canopy.
The intent behind the course in the C.A.R. was not to make you a specialist in jungle warfare but to get you 'comfortable' in that environment. From that perspective it was a success, small units can work on their Tactics, Techniques, & Procedures on their own time.
While eating the hairy caterpillar really sucked....overall it was a good introduction to working in a triple canopy environment run by a group of professional world class soldiers.
I'll see if I can dig up some pictures later on today.
How long has been since the United States and France held a joint military exercise?
I was in the USMC and we trained with the French a lot in 1987
I did a Med Cruise
we also trained with the French Foreign Legion
I would think this is a regular occurrence for Med Cruises--as SubFrench says
we trained at a French base called Camp Conjours [ spelling ??! ]
IIRC, the Foreign Legion trained with us in Sardinia--they were great at camouflage --they weren't too far away from my mortar unit, and I couldn't see them
we had liberty at Toulon France
pics to follow
CJ AND CJ2 are Camp Conjours [ spelling?] France-IIRC [ so long ago ]
...can SubFrench check spelling and location? I remember driving a long way from the coast, going up hills near many steep ravines and a lake ''nearby''
I never knew exactly where we were
CJ3002 same training area..I'm wearing headphones
COR002 is Corsica...believe it or not one of the air wing Marines asked if we wanted a photo op, because he said some Cobras were coming
the Cobras are the 2 dots above the camo
of course they zoomed over....I don't have that pic
this was long ago, I think those are the right pics
I know the Corsica and CJ3002 pic are correct for sure
we didn't have the high tech cameras back then, and I thought I took a lot more pics than what actually came out
a lot of my pics I got from other Marines with better cameras
-camp de Canjuers, in the southern France , Provence-Alpes-cote d'azur.
In Corsica , camp Raffali .
So , no big deal with the spelling , excepted for your "Subfrench"
hahhaha... I just glanced real quick at the name --is pardon the correct term?
thanks for the reply and answer
we landed in Corsica by chopper and some citizen was playing the USA national anthem and waving the US Flag.. [ salute to him ]
then we humped a 'long' way across the island to that area where my pic was
I don't remember any camp buildings in Corsica..I guess we stayed on the outskirts
