Yes, it's those intermediate steps that have my interest.

So far as I can tell, the ACE Mobile Force was slated for Norway, but it's not that big, compared to the other formations involved.

6th ID(L)(Arctic)(-)

Was in 6th ID from 1/91-1/94. Never heard anything about a Norway or NATO mission during that time. We were completely oriented to the Pacific. However, we were told that we could get to Europe (where unspecified) quicker than 10th ID.

My understanding it would be the 2nd Marine Division and Air wing along with elements of the 4th Division and Wing that would go to Norway along with any Danish, British, or Dutch forces to help defend Norway as well as Sweden.

Canada had a Mechanized Brigade and 24 CF-18's commited to send to Norway.
The US Army's 10th Mountain Division was commited to Norway as well.

I would say light infantry would work in the mountains of Norway.

Any troops sent to Norway should have a lot of Mountain Warfare training. Last time I looked, only Rangers did any Mountain Training. Does the Vermont National Guard have any left?

Yeah, still have the Mountain Warfare school plus when the 86th Bde went from armor to Light Infantry they decided to focus on Mountain Warfare.

It is not all good news. The two Armor Battalions converted to other roles. One became the Cavalry Battalion and the other became the Combat Support Battalion in the 86th Infantry Brigade. They also deactivated all but one battery in the Field Artillery Battalion. The 3/172 Infantry is still not an all Vermont unit with a Company from New Hampshire.

When the Army announced the creation of the 3/172nd they also stated they wanted to activate a Mountain Brigade with battalions in Maine, Rhode Island and New Hampshire and Western Massachusetts. Instead of creating several extra Mountain Brigades they have instead drawn down Guard strength in New York and New England.

What can you do?

The 86th IBCT currently has its 2 Infantry battalions (3-172 IN, in VT, NH and ME; 1-102 IN in CT), Cavalry Squadron (1-172 CAV), FA Battalion (1-101 FA, VT and MA); support battalion (186th BSB); and Engineer battalion (572d EN). Apparently, its third IN battalion (1-157 IN, in CO) will become aligned this year.

I don't think that hodge-podging ARNG units together all over the country is a good thing, but if you're going to criticize it, at least be accurate.

Later this year, interesting. In the interest of accuracy, you should let them know that they realigned too early.

This article (http://co.ng.mil/MEDIA/Pages/160324-infantry.aspx) that I found said Sep 2017. It wouldn't be the first time that timetables changed or that we executed early.

At the time, Maine and New Hampshire were supposed to build up to Battalion strength, each. There was even a Company in Rhode Island. The extra funding from the Pentagon never showed up. There was even plans to start a Mountain Brigade in the Rocky Mountain states. New York was proposed as a potential Mountain Infantry Battalion. You may have to dig for these proposals as they date from the 80's.

Is anyone familiar with a concept the U.S Army was developing in the mid 1980s called the Army of Excellence?
