Quoting from the book.....pages 23- 24 of the Puffin edition....

Quote:
The crowd sighed. Victims of tyranny, they needed someone in authority, someone to tell them what to do. They began to select their bunks with a minmum of confusion; no one was in the mood to be fussy. Although Father had told me to climb a rickety ladder to the upper bunk, I stayed below to take a look at our travelling cpompanions, our fellow capitalists. Possibly I imagined that by studying them I would uncover the cecret of our own villainy, bring some sanity, however harsh, to this insanity. What I saw only added to my bewilderment;

peering out from behind my braids, I saw nothingmore villainous than peasants- women in shawls, men in cotton jackets and trousers that resembled riding breecheds. I saw Polish peasants, not a rich capitalist among them; yanked from their land, they had toted their belongings in sacks, in shawls, in cardboard boxes. I saw, reflected in their stricken faces our mutual shock.

Later we learned of reports that more than a million Poles had been deported as "class enemies".
There you have it. Straight from the horses mouth. Whether she got it wrong or not, there were many other families like the Rudomin's exiled/transported without trial, and at a moments notice.

Not to a concentration camp....

Again, the comment was about "more than a million Poles"
In reality:
a) less than 1/3 million
b) not necessarily ethnic Poles (and ethnic identification was in many cases pretty blurred, especially in the present West Belarus)

Had Putin tried "the same" trick, there would've been no war in Donbass, and maybe even no Ukraine.

It's not a scholarly book but an autobiography. Beside the fact she didn't witness a "million" Poles being exiled personally (which would've been impossible anyway), she says "we learned" - basically, it's all hearsay and rumours.

And this horse can only be trusted for what she personally witnessed, and even in this case one has to take into account eyewitness testimonies are not always precise or true.

And this is what no one has denied. However, you've got to admit the 1 million figure has no ground in reality and historical documents.

Regardless of who owns the place, Crimea is one part of the world I'd really like to visit.

It ain't the owning that's the big hurdle, as much as it is the Russian mode of acquisition...

Brilliant thread by a brilliant Putler fanboy.
Not all populace of Baltian countries was sent to concentration camps. Actually they were deported to distant regions and were living like locals doing same job. My mom was friends with one deported family, an Estonian woman who married German. Their daugter attended same kindergarten as me. They returned home after 1959.
As I know in Europe was usual practice to punish Nazist collaborants. Some of them continued to hide in forests and killing activists and Soviet officials.

I have seen on Spiegel site an article about deporting 9 millions ethnic Germans in Europe after WWII, 450 000 have died in the process. Much bigger number deported than in the USSR during Stalin's rule

Ethnically deportees were mixed bag. Many of them were Jewish like the family described (ironically a very mistreatment saved their lives), Ukrainian nationalist and their families were also prominent.
In our small miner's settlement in Southern Yakutia there were folks from different regions, some were deported, others arrived voluntarily. We had Poles, Germans, Crimean Tatars, Western Ukrainians, one Bielorussian and one Caucasian family, Udmurts, Gipsies, Mongols/Buriats. Jews were extremely rare. Sometimes nomadic Yacut deers sheperds were staying in their tents. When we were kids we did not pay attention to ethnicity of our neghbors and their kids just as our parents. Cannot remember no accidents on ethnic ground. There was no criminality besides some fights between teenagers ending usually with somebody's bleeding nose.
I visited those places on my car last August to visit my old friends. Most of them are good hunters and fishermen. I am happy I was raised in multiethnic community.
If we start do disturb old wounds process will never stop. We cannot change our history.

Have a look at this gem from the USA...

Or in printed form....

It appears that Crimean unification is an old story, the next chapter will be Rus' unification.
