All it would take is one large rogue wave and Draco's floating airfield is a submarine...

You simply do not understand that the annular deck is 50 m wide & 2.36 km long, slanted 8 to prevent side slip from centrifugal force. It is infinetely better for landing or taking off than a carrier or even an 800 m cylinder, on which it would be imposible to land, if it were rotating.
It's you that doesn't get it. Your runway is sitting atop the equivalent of an inner tube. A giant steel inner tube. Or, have you suddenly changed how it's floating on the surface of the ocean?
That's a question you need to answer, since your original post specified an 800 meter diameter annular ring, per your previous discussion that had a 50 meter diameter.

Or, are you really suggesting that the runway is a 50 meter wide circle plopped on top of a 800 meter diameter steel inner tube? So, if that's the case, aircraft are trying to land on a curved runway?

Quote:
Your dictionary definition stating that annular is disk like is perfectly wrong. Annular means that there is a whole, bigger than the width of the material. Like a ring, a freezbe, etc, Eevn an old music record with a small whole is not really annular.
Annular simply means circular or having a ring shape. Either this thing is an inner tube 800 meters in diameter with a 50 meter diameter tube forming it's perimeter or its a cylinder.

An anchored tower is far more vulnerable in a storm than a floating vessel. The airport is much less susceptble to damage & impossible to capsize (as the DD often did in a typhooon, especially when they were very low on fuel).
How would you know? Besides, both of those platforms were floating ones and stationary just as your platform would be. Your platform simply by size is going to be prone to continuous or near continuous non-uniform stresses as waves pass it. It is far more likely to break up first, then sink than to simply capsize and sink. But, those platforms I showed are easily hundreds of times more stable and capable of staying afloat in a rough sea than your design.

The fact that You mention 1/4" plate proves that You're severely challenged engineering-wise. The vessel would immediately fail by local buckling. Moreover, the fact that the deck is 50 m wide tells You nothing about the diameter of the section of the toroid. As I wrote, the deck is supported by a lattice structure.
Read it again. I was suggesting an approximate weight for this thing. I used 1/4" plate for the hull as a starting point.

Yes I'm afraid he does mean a curved runway, and IIRC he intends to spin the ring to aid take-off.

Well, it's that or a 50 meter wide runway with a 360 degree landing capability...
