In 1815 We Took A Little Trip

On the 8th of January the USA inflected one of the most one-sided defeats on the British Military in history at the Battle of New Orleans!

General Andrew Jackson with a force consisting of Regular US Army, Navy and Marines, frontier Militia from Tennessee, Mississippi Light Dragoons, New Orleans Militia including free men of color, Creole pirates of Barataria, and a party of Choctaw Indians. The victory not only prevented the British from taking not just New Orleans but control of the Louisiana Purchase and ended Great Britain's strategic goal of The War of 1812 of stopping American western expatiation.

Old Hickory

Eighth of January an old fiddle tune in honor of the victory!

The two Free Black Militia Companies from New Orleans had the best looking uniforms of either side. They did not have firearms, though! The Baratarians supplied a couple of Cannon crews and munitions for Jackson's troops. There were several Kentucky Militia units that showed up without a coat (in Winter!), without firearms and without provisions. Many were placed on the West Bank during the Battle. They retreated after the British hit them there. The Highlanders were wearing trousers and not kilts!

Jackson declared Martial Law a number of local rich men visited him and tried to persuade him to retreat if the British advanced. It seems they wanted their homes and plantations to not be damaged! Jackson did not want to surrender the city without a fight. The British invaded up a Bayou because one needed a pilot to get over the bar at the several mouths of the Mississippi. The British bought information from local Spanish Fishermen in the St Bernard Parish area. That is how they found out about the bayou on a French Plantation owner's property. It started almost a mile from the Mississippi and went out to the Gulf.

Military stalemate; both sides' invasion attempts repulsed. However, we still won.

I'd argue against that but there are already long discussions about it posted on ACG. One thing I do think is true is that there was a victory for both sides in the peace that was established and an accepted border. Never again would the issues be fought for militarily and it eventually led to a friendship between Canada, Britain, and the United States. Had the peace been handled differently I don't think that would have been as quick and true.

Allright i'll bite.

The British Navy practice of boarding American boats and seeking British nationals to impress had actually ended before the war. The Treaty of Ghent actually gave no concessions for neutral shipping in any respect, or any Naval concessions whatsoever. The American claim that that was the issue for war is highly dubious as the practice had ended in the early part of the wars with France. It was a pretext. The real reason was that Canada looked like a nice fat plum to pick while Britain was preoccupied in France. At the end of the war a chunk of the USA was occupied, the treasury was bankrupt, the new England states were agitating for succession, there were war protests in the streets of NY, the capital was burned down and the United States had not won a battle on land. If that was what the United States had gone to war to accomplish then the U.S. won.

I think it goes deeper than that, to say Canada won in your original post is a joke since it wasn't even a country yet. However, we were and took on the most prominent brute of all time, we kicked some ass and gained their respect ever since.

i'm not trying to start a fight. and i agree it goes deeper than that as you say. United States had some bright spots including Plattsburg and New Orleans. It was an important war for the United States in its early development. it was a complicated war and a very fine study in war and the making of peace if the jingoism on both sides is taken out. I posted a video meant as a corollary to the Horton song. I never said that Canada won in any post..

This battle was the greatest victory ever won in peacetime. The war was over on that fateful day.
