Saturday or Sunday Afternoons are the best, holidays better. This group intends to stand on 9 September - just before the 9/11 anniversary. What veterans aid organization you pass the donations to is your business. I'd suggests splitting it between a national organization & a local group. Dolphinis & Co collect between $300 & $3000 in 3-6 hours. They have started running online auctions in tandem with these stands. Simple items like a US flag are the auction item. Bidding has closed with $800 & $1000 top bids.

There are probablly other ways, but this one puts a bit of help where it is needed.
If you want to meet a Government that has a very short memory about veterans, go to the UK. lcm1

Governments do what they do. Policy reflects whoever controls the politicans.

Whatever the veterans have gotten out of the US government has largely been though the efforts of the veterans themselves to exert some degree of control over key politicians. Some groups have been fairly effective at this, others not so. With a much smaller number of veterans in the US I expect the political power will continue to decline, unless some new methods are found to organize and exert pressure on the politicians.

Stand for the Fallen 18 May

Sgt Mark Dolfini is flying to Albuquerque this weekend for a fund raiser to benefit the wounded and other veterans who are in a bad way. The primary recipient of these fund raisers Mark Dolfini has organized has been the Soldiers Angels volunteer assistance group operating at the US hospital in Landstuhle Germany. Local organizations providing emergency aid to veterans in financial trouble have also benefitted.

If you are in the Albuquerque are on the 18th of May make if a point to stop by and support Sgt Dolfini & his friends.

The specific location is at Rio Rancho NM. the corner of NM 528 and Souther Blvd. Adjacent to the Walgreens pharmacy.

The Albuquerque fundraising event pulled in a bit over $2,400 in curbside donations during the afternoon of the 18th. Today, the 26th May in Lafayette he and the other former Marines brought in $1711 from about 130 donors passing on the street. Funds as before are going to the Soldiers angels volunteer group at the US military hospital in landstule Germany. A lesser portion are distributed to local veterans assistance funds of the local veterans groups.

The Soldiers Angels group is still active at the US military hospital in Germany. A email from the manager last month told me the hospital had a intake of 3,100+ US service personnel in 2013. Locally we added to our fund for them at the 25 May fundraising stand, bringing their fund to $3,600. If $5,000 can be raised some substantial discounts can be had on purchasing the material sent to the SA group, so the goal is to bring in about $1,500 more this summer.

The local Marine Corps League has continued is fund raising efforts for the Soldiers Angles & other veterans assistance. 17 May they did another Stand on the corner of the street & pulled in $1,247. Out of previous donations they have provided this year over $1,800 in emergency assistance to local veterans preventing evictions, utility disconnects and vehicle repossessions.

The photo is of 74 year old Donna Adams taking a turn by the flag during the event.

Marine Corps League Detachement in Lafayette Indiana will be doing another Stand for the Fallen fund raiser Sunday 6th September. 10:00 to 17:00 they will be standing by the intersection taking donations. Money collected will be split 75% to purchase material distributed by the Soldiers Angels volunteer group in the US military hospital @ Landsthule Germany. 25% to assist local veterans. None will go to salaries, consultant fees, or similar overhead.

The Marines in that detachment are great. Mostly old farts, but there are a few younger ones who have taken the time away from family and work to help.

The emergency fund they contribute to has gone through over $18,000 this year. Mostly preventing evictions, then paying utility shut offs. Many of the vets assisted are elgible for assistance from the Veterans Administration, but had not applied in time, or applied at all. It is dumbfounding how many two or four year service vets think they do not rate benefits. The people who manage this emergency fund can take action in a day or two when necessary, bridging the gap until the bueracracy can take over.

Initial count from the fund raiser was $1266. That was taken in during 7 1/2 hours on the street corner. Between 250 & 300 people stopped by, mostly families. About a quarter of the adults stopping by had military service, which is a much higher proportion than in the general US population (7%).
