Yes, those varmit Barbary pirates even caused problems for Uncle Sam, and as such 'he' despatched a punitive fleet and some Marines - hence we have the march 'From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of TRIPOLI'.
'Islamic' piracy and slavery had a great impact on the European economy, particularly the southern regions. Trade that had traditionally been plied by sea was often forced to be more expensively transported over land.
The early 19th century saw a drop in snatching Europeans, because of reactive pressures, but it wasn't until the early 20th. century it was finally stopped.
Slavery still goes on in Africa and some trading still goes on across the Red Sea and down as far as Yemen. I doubt if the Islamic world will officially apologise for it since their number one 'Prophet' is considered to be the model for all Muslim [males], and he was very much engaged in ownership and trading.
ps. Sobering pause for thought - it is almost certain that many 'Muslims' in parts of the Middle East and North Africa, and those who have migrated from there in the last hundred or two years may well have European DNA, from their actestors impregnating European slave women and girls.
Those 1001 Nights 'romantic' pictures painted of pale skinned harem bints do not portray the trauma and humiliation many of those European - and indeed other women - and even young girls - had to go through.
