Very intrresting. The history of Soviet intelligence agencies is one of my favorite subjects. I would think the most interesting archives would be in Moscow so I would be interested in what these archives mention. The amount of information the Soviets were getting and where they were getting the information from is astonishing.

Sad to say, probably won't get to see Moscows' archives. At least the Ukrainian archive may show some interesting stuff; I suspect most of it will show up as black lined-out items though. Will they show some of the horrifying stuff? Or will it be all very mundane?

The other thing is who is going to translate the archives to English? Do the major media people have Ukrainian translators on staff who can plow through decades of NKVD/GRU/KGB bureaucracy? Wouldn't it be nice if someone could do a wikidump?

Wouldn't the Russians have taken anything interesting back to Moscow when they pulled out in 1991?

That would be my guess. I would think the most significant material wouldnt still be in The Ukraine. I would also think some material may have been destroyed like some of the Stasi documents were.

I agree. Im always interested in learning information from Cold War archives. I like to frequently check for any information that gets released in regards to Stasi archives.

No? You think so? Or do you actually know something about this?
Why not? Every institution would at least try to take important stuff with em, wouldn't they?

Where with them? Ukrainian KGB became SBU in 1991 instead of pulling somewhere as some posters here suggested. Accordingly the republican KGB archive remained in their custody. The same thing with MVD.

"Ukranian translators" you think those records are actually in Ukrainian? There will probably be 1 interesting page per every 10000 mundane pages.

Being one of the few people on here actually dealing with intelligence documentation on a significant basis, I can state with a great deal of certainty that large amounts of this documentation will deal with staffing issues, transfers, promotions and demotions, mundane policy directives, open source information such as translations of newspaper and journal articles, prisoner lists for usually petty crimes, supply issues, etc etc.

Those from the age of "Ukrainization" (1920s) probably are.
