First Kill - documentary

Very rare documentary about Vietnam war with first-hand testimonies from participants.

"The documentary consists of interviews with Michael Herr and several Vietnam veterans. The depth of the interviews provides insight into the feelings that accompany violence, fear, hate, seduction and pleasure."

To a Squid, this is an important film...but not because of what y'all might think. We were in plenty of gunfights in '72...got hit...lost a man.

We Navy guys had the ability to get out of a gunfight at about 30 mph and the option to slug it out or get the hell out of Dodge. When we supported troops stuck in their AO, we certainly did all we could to protect the grunt.

I can't imagine the terror of being stuck in a fight with no apparent exit..."very frightening" can't even begin to describe the situations or touch on the courage an average man dealt with or even imagined
.

I agree about the tunnel rat guy. A bit too much of the sterotypical "babykiller" and "ear necklace" role being highlighted. Still though it is interesting from a psychological standpoint that someone of that mentality may have thoroughly enjoyed popping someone in the head with a .45 Colt.

Back in '93 I met a guy that claimed he was a tunnel rat for us. He was small enough but he came across as a bullshitter, in that and all other things.

But... I remember him saying how he could smell them and as long as he didn't wash for a week, they couldn't smell him. Maybe he was the real deal.

Shitty and scary job though.
